MSC Vertriebs Announces COM Express(TM) Modules Now Support the Newest Dual-Core Intel(R) Core(TM) Processors

SAN BRUNO, CA — (Marketwire) — 06/04/12 — The dual-core variants of the Intel® Core processor family of the third generation (code name “Ivy Bridge”) that have just been introduced by Intel® are now also available on the newest COM Express modules from Vertriebs GmbH. Based on an innovative 22nm process technology by Intel®, the processor family is manufactured with three-dimensional transistors in order to achieve higher performance with lower power dissipation. As a result, the new modules now deliver increased processing, graphics and video performance relative to the earlier platform.

MSC delivers two new COM Express module families that support the Type 2 (MSC CXB-6SI) or Type 6 (MSC C6B-7S) pin-outs. Besides the first products with the Quad Core Intel®Core i7-3615QE (with 45 W maximum total power dissipation) and (maximum 35 W TDP), which have already been announced in April, the more economical Intel® Core i3 and i5 versions with two processor cores are now also available. The COM Express modules are offered with Intel® Core i5-3610ME (35 W TDP), Intel® Core i3-3210ME (35 W TDP) or Intel® Core i3-3217UE (17 W TDP) processors.

All i5 and i7 processors support the Intel® 64 architecture, the Intel® virtualization technology, the Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions and the Intel® Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). In order to raise performance, individual cores can be overclocked owing to their integrated Enhanced Intel® Turbo Boost technology. The range of features is slightly reduced for the cheaper i3 variants.

Significant features of this new product generation are the low power consumption with simultaneously higher clock rates and improved graphics and video performance. The graphic controller Intel® HD 4000 Graphics provided with the processor offers improved video and graphics acceleration over the second generation of Core processors, and surprisingly provides support for three independent displays. Besides accelerated full HD video encoding and decoding, DirectX 11 and OpenGL 3.1 are supported for the first time. In addition, the graphics turbo boost technology guarantees excellent graphics performance. Intel® also offers a base for OpenCL 1.1 with this new generation and thereby enables use of the graphics engines for applications that make extensive use of floating-point computations.

The new MSC module families integrate the improved Intel® 7 series chip set. Fast dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM modules (two SO-DIMM pods) with a maximum storage capacity of 16 GB likewise ensure great computing performance with simultaneously low power consumption.

Besides the five or seven PCI Express x1 channels on the interfaces, the two COM Express module families are equipped with a PCI Express graphics (PEG) x16 interface, HD audio and a Gbit-Ethernet interface. For the connection of high-resolution displays, DisplayPort and HDMI interfaces are provided with a resolution of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels. Data can be stored via four SATA II channels at up to 300 MB/s or on an NAND flash SSD that can be optionally populated. An on-board plug for a controlled fan for a special cooling solution permits the implementation of quiet systems for noise-sensitive environments.

The MSC C6B-7S modules additionally offer four USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces each, according to the Type 6 pin-out specification, and allow for direct access to the digital display interfaces.

The MSC CXB-6SI modules have the common Type 2 interfaces as the conventional 32-bit PCI bus, and are also equipped with eight USB 2.0 ports and one Enhanced IDE port. Digital display interfaces are also provided multiplexed on the PEG lines.

Both module families, the MSC CXB-6SI and MSC C6B-7S, are especially suitable for sophisticated applications with 3D graphics, high-resolution videos or for the control of large screen displays, and naturally they can be used anywhere where the highest processor performance is required. The high performance platforms run on the Windows® 7, Windows® XP (embedded) and Linux operating systems. The UEFI firmware from AMI is used as BIOS.

The first customer samples and starter kits are available now with short lead times.
