Source Code Research Accelerated

When analyzing source code, a single search often does not find the best result for a query. The search term must be modified, or a different word is tried – and then the search is repeated. This leads to hundreds of repeated searches per day. If a developer has to press the same key combinations everytime, fill in the same dialogs, this may lead to exhaustion and health problems like repetitive strain injuries.

Depeche View solves this by providing a new user interface: all source code files from a folder are loaded into memory, showing them all in a single window. To search a word, it is typed, without the need for dialogues or menu function calls. The search is done across all loaded text files. Furthermore, words on the screen can be searched directly by clicking on them.

Once important pieces of text are found, a bookmark can be created with another click. This way, research results can be grouped in a speaking manner. More complex searches using AND OR NOT are also supported.

With release 1.4.0, Depeche View provides a further improved user interface, especially for easier loading of text files.

The Base Edition is free for private, non-commercial use, and can load up to 10000 files.

The commercial Extended Edition can load .zip, .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 contents directly, run automated searches whenever text is put into the clipboard, and accept drag and drop from Windows Explorer. It also allows to define user scripts on nearly every key combination. The free Base Edition also provides a Demo Mode, allowing to try those features.
