Vicor Corporation Introduces New 12 V-Optimized Additions to Picor Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulator Product Family

NUREMBERG, GERMANY — (Marketwire) — 02/26/13 — Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ: VICR) today announced the expansion of its award-winning Picor Cool-Power® ZVS Buck Regulator product line for high efficiency point-of-load DC-DC regulation. Optimized for 12 V operation (8 V to 18 Vin), these new PI34XX series buck regulators increase performance for a host of embedded applications in computing, telecommunications, industrial and other environments, delivering over 95% peak efficiency for 12 V to 3.3 V regulation and up to 15 A.

The Picor portfolio has gained acceptance with customers worldwide. The integration of a high performance ZVS topology within a high density (10 mm x 14 mm x 2.6 mm) System-in-Package (SiP) enhances point-of-load DC-DC regulation by reducing the switching losses associated with conventional hard-switching buck regulators. The reduction of switching losses enables a higher efficiency and higher density regulator that is also simple to use. PI34XX series buck regulators integrate control circuitry, power semiconductors and support components within the SiP and require only an external inductor with minimal capacitors to form a complete DC-DC switching mode buck regulator.

“We recognize that some customers are constrained by a 12 V architecture and are not able to take advantage of higher line conversion with our existing regulators,” said Robert Gendron, Vice President, Picor Semiconductor Power Solutions, Vicor. “We optimized our 8 V to 36 V wide range regulators for a 12 V family, reducing the Vin range to 8 V to 18 V and further enhancing efficiency for 12 V usage.”

“ZVS is a key differentiator in this class of device, enabling high performance power delivery within embedded systems,” said Ralf Buehler, Vice President and Managing Director EMEA, Future Electronics. “We-re delighted to have Vicor with us at Embedded World for the public debut of its new PI34XX buck regulator series, and we-re confident in our ability to help customers make the most of this innovative product architecture.”

“Vicor-s new PI34XX Zero-Voltage Switching buck regulators provide 95% efficiency, one of the highest in the industry, in a small 10×14-mm package,” said Mohan Mankikar, president, Micro-Tech Consultants. “With 12 V input, these regulators are designed for a wide variety of contemporary, advanced technical applications that require power converters with high efficiency and small size.”

The Picor Cool-Power portfolio currently consists of the PI31XX series of isolated converters and the PI33XX and PI34XX series of ZVS Buck Regulators. Future products in the family will include additional ZVS Buck Regulators with different voltage/current capability, ZVS Buck-Boost Regulators, and ZVS Boost Regulators, all of which are expected to set new industry performance benchmarks.

Picor PI34XX-00-LGIZ Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulators are all priced at $9.84 for 1000-unit quantities. Visit the for more information. To order, email or call 1-800-735-6200.
