MacKay Meters Receives EMV(TM) Level 1 Contactless Certification for MacKay Guardian(TM) SOLO Parking Meter

NEW GLASGOW, NOVA SCOTIA — (Marketwired) — 04/05/13 — MacKay Meters announced today that its latest version of the MacKay Guardian SOLO with an integrated cellular module, contactless payment and RFID using Near Field Communications (NFC), has received EMV Level 1 Contactless Certification. The SOLO became the first FCC certified, single-space wireless parking meter on September 21, 2011, the first to achieve PTCRB Certification on September 22, 2011 and with today-s announcement, the SOLO becomes the first to achieve EMV Level 1 Contactless Certification.

“NFC payment is becoming commonplace and MacKay wanted to ensure that the SOLO was able to accommodate its usage. Incorporating NFC payment was a natural progression for the SOLO, and we are delighted to announce that we have received EMV Level 1 standards contactless certification” said Adrian O-Neil, Chief Technology Officer with MacKay Meters. “The standards certification process is something the parking industry should place great importance on. Meeting these standards clearly shows our customers that the SOLO will behave consistently when accepting NFC payments and in line with the guidelines put forth by Visa, MasterCard, American Express and others through EMVCo.”

About MacKay Guardian SOLO

The MacKay Guardian SOLO provides cellular connectivity and payment flexibility to customers as it currently supports a variety of payment forms including magnetic stripe credit cards, contactless NFC payments (e.g. MasterCard® PayPass®, Google Wallet), coins, smart cards, and pay-by-phone. In addition, the SOLO features MacKay-s patented SmartHousing technology which uses an RFID reader in the SOLO to read the location information from an RFID tag mounted inside the housing/pole. The SOLO then automatically adjusts its meter configuration based on that location, without human intervention.

Type Approval provides an increased level of confidence that interoperability and consistent behavior between compliant applications have been achieved. The Level 1 Type Approval process tests compliance with the electromechanical characteristics, logical interface, and transmission protocol requirements defined in the EMV Specifications.
