Joyent Brings Opscode Chef to Joyent Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/24/13 — , the high-performance cloud infrastructure company, and today announced that is now fully supported and available on the Joyent® Cloud. Joyent customers can now easily implement Hadoop and other large deployments using re-usable configuration templates — known as cookbooks and recipes — for automating infrastructure with Opscode Chef.

Opscode Chef helps fundamentally change the way Joyent customers can work in the cloud. Previously, customers seeking to deploy large-scale projects on the Joyent Cloud would need to manually configure individual virtual machines to work together across big deployments, which often proves costly and time-consuming. Now with Opscode Chef, Joyent customers are able to completely automate the provisioning process, leveraging existing recipes from the Opscode community to spin up Hadoop or other large projects or adapting existing recipes to create new projects.

“At Wanelo, our mission is to democratize and transform the world-s commerce by reorganizing shopping around people. We-ve built a network of stores, products and people that connects millions of users, resulting in surging traffic that-s often unpredictable,” said Konstantin Gredeskoul, CTO, Wanelo. “Using Opscode Chef, we can automate deployment and provisioning of all application services on Joyent Cloud. Joyent-s raw CPU and I/O performance, as well as ability to burst into additional cores as traffic grows, means we don-t need to add virtual machines during traffic spikes. This creates massive value and efficiency for our team.”

Built specifically for automating infrastructure at scale, Opscode Chef is an open-source system integration framework that provides cookbooks and recipes to enable everything from the automation of configuration management and provisioning to business acceleration through a continuous delivery application pipeline. Joyent customers can now access a rich knowledge base to help them implement large projects and features in the cloud through the robust open source Chef community, which features tens of thousands of users, more than 1,200 individual contributors, 200 corporate contributors, and 800 cookbooks.

“For cloud computing infrastructures to be impactful, they need to be flexible and easy-to-deploy so companies can focus on their core competencies — running their business — rather than dealing with complex operational issues,” said Jay Wampold, VP of Marketing, Opscode. “By making Opscode Chef available to its customers with Opscode commercial support, Joyent is helping businesses take advantage of the scalability, performance and flexibility of Joyent Cloud without requiring the time — and cost — of manually managing virtual machines at massive scale. The ultimate result is a renewed focus on business, not on IT management.”

“Our partnership with Opscode will allow the Joyent high performance cloud to also be the -easy to use cloud,-” said Henry Wasik, president and CEO, Joyent. “This is critically important as we see a large move to more -big data- projects. By bringing Opscode Chef to the Joyent Cloud, we-re making it easier for our customers to spin up massive environments quickly, thereby allowing them to keep pace with the complex demands of today-s applications.”
