Lightning Activity in the Northeastern United States

BOULDER, CO — (Marketwired) — 06/13/13 — Are you Weather-Ready? Lightning Safety Week starts on June 23!

Vaisala-s (HEX: VAIAS) U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) has been operational for over 30 years, and has the longest archive of lightning data. Statistics from this unique dataset provide a comprehensive view of lightning activity over the United States, which is highly valued for lightning safety, risk management, and severe weather analysis.

In the northeastern U.S., the highest average lightning frequency is to the southwest in southern Illinois and Indiana, where the highest density exceeds eight flashes per square kilometer per year in some areas. Most of the lightning occurs during June, July, and August between afternoon and early evening. The attached PDF document shows a lightning density map, lightning fatality numbers, and insurance claims. The same information is also available for other regions of the United States.
