WANdisco Announces Availability of Apache Subversion 1.8 With Significant New Features Including Vastly Improved Merge Functionality

SAN RAMON, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/18/13 — WANdisco (LSE: WAND), a provider of high-availability software for global enterprises to meet the challenges of Big Data and distributed software development and a major sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation, announced availability of Subversion 1.8, which offers significantly improved merge capabilities and major improvements in storage efficiency. WANdisco offers free, fully tested, certified Subversion 1.8 binaries for download on its website.

WANdisco open source developer and senior Subversion committer Julian Foad led the effort to deliver symmetric merge in version 1.8. With the contributions of Julian Foad and WANdisco-s other open source developers, the company delivered on past promises it made to the Apache Subversion community to support the significant merge improvements and other enhancements that users had been asking for.

With Subversion 1.8, users will enjoy long-awaited merge functionality enhancements as well as major improvements in storage efficiency. The enhancements include:

Symmetric, or automatic, merge capability for simplifying the merge process and eliminating conflicts caused by users selecting the wrong type of merge.

Simultaneous change handling between branches rather than differentiating between sync and reintegration merge forms.

Rejection of merge attempts between unrelated branches to decrease the likelihood of user errors that often result in conflicts.

Decrease in server set-up costs.

Revision property packing and directory deltification to reduce backup and restore times as well as the number of files stored for up to more than 90% storage capacity savings.

“While Subversion simplifies development and helps teams seamlessly collaborate, it has had limited merge capabilities, leading some developers to choose other SCM systems,” said David Richards, WANdisco CEO. “Subversion 1.8, under the development leadership of Julian Foad, has addressed those issues and users will greatly appreciate the powerful new features.”

WANdisco-s Subversion binaries provide a complete, fully tested version of Subversion based on the most recent stable release, including the latest fixes, and undergo the same rigorous quality assurance process that WANdisco uses for its enterprise products that support the world-s largest Subversion implementations. WANdisco-s fully tested, certified Subversion 1.8 binaries are available for free download at .

WANdisco will host “Introducing Subversion 1.8” today at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. During this free webinar hosted by leading technology industry journalist Adrian Bridgwater, core Subversion developers Julian Foad and Philip Martin will discuss these significant new features.
