EWSDN 2013 in Berlin on 10-11 October – Early-Bird Registration Now Open!

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is emerging as a promising architectural solution to support and foster innovation in telecommunication networks. Several switch and router vendors are opening up their hardware, offering APIs to allow for “software defined” control of networking operations. The vitality of the SDN community in industrial, start-up, and academic circles is manifested by the release of several SDN tools and development environments, many of which are open-sourced.

Inspired by research and collaborations with industry partners on SDN and the 7th European Framework Program OFELIA project, EICT organized in October 2012 the first workshop on SDN in Europe. Due to the great interest, the Second European Workshop on Software Defined Networks (EWSDN) will take place in Berlin at the bcc Berlin Congress Center on 10-11 October 2013. This two-day event is organized by EICT and BISDN GmbH. Experts in the fields of telecommunications and networking from operators, industry, academia and leading research labs, as well as representatives of the SDN startup scene, will gather in Berlin to present and discuss their latest research results and activities on SDN.

SDN is undoubtedly one of the chief trends in ICT today. In the past year, we have seen all big players in the networking arena starting to ride the SDN wave one way or another. Considering the spectrum of SDN research areas, a lot of interest is now focused on forwarding abstractions, “Northbound” APIs towards applications, SDN high level languages and tools for improving the software robustness like compilers and debuggers. Inter-domain aspects and inter-controller orchestration policies draw the attention of researchers as well. Early-stage standardization has commenced on several fronts. New switch architectures supporting SDN are also considered a hot topic. The application of SDN in the domain of optical networks is paving the way toward a unified control plane framework to integrate the packet and optical domains, while promoting better coordination with higher network layers and applications. In mobile networks, SDN concepts will lead to novel programming of the base station wireless data plane. SDN-enhanced Evolved Packet Core functionalities will enable Mobile Operators to get greater control over their infrastructure and introduce novel value-added services. The introduction of SDN concepts can also benefit local wireless access technologies too by improving resource utilization and facilitating their programmability.

Strategically, as SDN progresses towards Carrier-grade solutions, what will be the impact on current value chains, business relationship and the telecom ecosystem in general?

Tactically, which innovative services and business models will emerge out of SDN technologies?

Join us in Berlin for EWSDN 2013 by registering early as we will address these questions and more through a technical program packed with presentations from world-class speakers and representatives of all major SDN players in networking and telecommunications, including Ericsson, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, Swisscom and many more.

Dr. Hagen Woesner, managing director of BISDN and project manager at EICT GmbH, will chair the SDN workshop again, supported by the Technical Program Committee Co-Chairs Dr. Saverio Niccolini (NEC Laboratories Europe), Prof. Stefano Salsano (University of Tor Vergata), and Dr. Elio Salvadori (CREATE-NET).

Workshop Registration

The registration cost for the two-day workshop is only 300 for “early birds” (until September 15th, 2013; excl. VAT). Go ahead, REGISTER NOW! and take advantage of the early-bird discount.
