CounterPath Bria Mobile Softphone Powers Operator OTT Solution for Latin American Service Provider

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — (Marketwired) — 11/19/13 — CounterPath Corporation (NASDAQ: CPAH)(TSX: CCV), a leading developer of award-winning desktop, tablet and mobile VoIP software products and solutions, today announced its customer Cablemas, Mexico-s second largest cable operator, has added a Bria-based desktop and mobile softphone solution to its residential offering and has begun deploying the applications to customers across Mexico. By enabling calling on mobile devices via either Wi-Fi or data networks, the solution gives Cablemas end users unprecedented quality, flexibility and value, and gives the cable operator a competitive advantage in the communications market which is becoming increasingly encroached upon by third-party Over The Top (OTT) communications providers.

UK-based research house mobilesquared forecasts that the Over The Top (OTT) communications market is set to be worth $53.7 billion and have 2.1 billion smartphone users communicating by OTT services such as WhatsApp, Skype and WeChat by 2017. It also estimates that Skype is currently costing telcos $100 million per day and $36.5 billion per year. Statistics such as these illustrate why cable and mobile operators are increasingly recognizing the need to look to diversify their communications offerings and are turning to in-house OTT solutions to compete against outside providers and retain their customers and revenue.

A CounterPath customer since 2011, Cablemas serves over 1.6 million pay-TV subscribers, 315,000 VoIP customers, and 600,000 broadband customers in more than 50 cities across Mexico. The company turned to CounterPath for an innovative and user-friendly solution to extend their fixed SIP lines to mobile devices, allowing their customers to be reachable anywhere they happen to be, whether home, office or anywhere in between. After successful testing and market assessments, Cablemas began deploying Bria mobile softphone apps for iPhone and Android devices earlier this year in selected cities, enabling their customers to make and receive calls on their mobile devices using either Wi-Fi or data networks.

“By extending their fixed SIP lines to mobile devices, Cablemas is opening the door for their customers to communicate in new ways,” said Todd Carothers, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Products, CounterPath. “In addition to fulfilling customer requirements for always-on connectivity, our Bria softphone solution enables operators to be competitive against the Internet OTT providers such as Skype and Viber while offering a more secure and superior end user experience than that of existing OTT offerings. We look forward to continuing to work with Cablemas to further expand their mobile softphone offerings.”
