People–s Postcode Lottery Deploys Postgres From EnterpriseDB to Expand Charitable Programs

BEDFORD, MA — (Marketwired) — 10/06/14 — (EDB), the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products and database compatibility solutions, has today announced People–s Postcode Lottery (PPL), a lottery management organization that supports charitable trusts and projects, has chosen to deploy EDB–s Postgres Plus Advanced Server. People–s Postcode Lottery adopted an open source based stack with EDB–s Postgres Plus database and to lower costs while supporting growth in the number of players and charities.

People–s Postcode Lottery in the U.K. has raised more than $62 million for charity. The organization needed to update its core lottery system to lower costs and support an increase in transactions. The team discovered, however, that its upgrade plans would have led to higher maintenance and operational costs for its legacy Oracle database and application.

Instead, PPL looked for a new solution and selected EDB–s as its database with Red Hat JBoss Fuse to support the integration with internal and external applications. The organization worked with , a solutions provider based in the Netherlands, on the project due to Trivento–s experience with charitable organizations and the available combination of the EDB and Red Hat software products.

Alec Burrett, head of data services at People–s Postcode Lottery, explained: “We had challenging goals for this year — to expand but also reduce operational costs by 25 percent. Trivento showed us that EnterpriseDB–s solution would be able to provide the functionality of Oracle at a lower cost and with greater scalability. Adopting open source solutions with Red Hat and EnterpriseDB helped us meet our objectives.”

Postgres Plus Advanced Server with database compatibility for Oracle provides enterprise-class performance and the ability to support Oracle applications. With database compatibility, Postgres Plus allows PPL to meet its goals without additional fees and the need for an expensive rip-and-replace, all while continuing to use existing skills and tools.

Red Hat JBoss Fuse is an open source Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) that offers organizations a robust, flexible, and easy-to-use platform to integrate applications, data, services, and devices. The integration platform uses popular open source technologies, including Apache Camel, to provide transformation, routing, and protocol-matching services. The technology eases the development and maintenance of integration solutions and provides a vast array of connectivity options. For example, with Red Hat JBoss Fuse, PPL is able to expand functionality by easily adapting modules and allowing modules to communicate with each other more quickly.

“The needs of People–s Postcode Lottery align perfectly with what we do best — help organizations of all sizes cut database costs by deploying an enterprise-class, open source based alternative to proprietary databases,” said Sandor Klein, Vice President, International Sales at EnterpriseDB. “The powerful combination of Postgres and JBoss Fuse are creating new opportunities for cost savings across the enterprise software stack.”

Mike Piech, general manager of Middleware at Red Hat, further clarified the importance of the project: “For organizations with tight budgets, the combination of Red Hat JBoss Fuse and Postgres is a great option. Red Hat–s enterprise-grade open source integration solution enables organizations to deliver better business solutions faster and reduce total cost of ownership. Pairing software from Red Hat and EnterpriseDB helps organizations like PPL cut costs and reallocate budget to more strategic initiatives.”

With the new solution, PPL has been able to meet its goal of reducing operational costs by 25 percent and users have reported positively on the increased functionality and improved design of the new solution. Organizations like PPL are increasingly turning to open source based solutions to lower costs and gain the greater flexibility that comes from freedom from vendor lock-in. With EnterpriseDB and Red Hat, People–s Postcode Lottery hopes to continue to expand and bring even more aid to its charities and communities.
