Developing the Internet of Things: Building Connected Apps for the Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt and VeraLite Smart Home Controller

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 12/22/14 — , a leading provider of software solutions for application and database development, is featuring the Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt and VeraLite Smart Home Controller in this week–s “Developing the Internet of Things (IoT) Showcase.” The Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt is a keyless, electronic deadbolt that features Z-Wave technology. This enables it to be controlled by a VeraLite Smart Home Controller, a connectivity hub that exposes a set of REST API calls which can be used to interface with gadgets and devices.

IoT is enabling a class of application architecture that aggregates information from connected devices and gadgets across multiple form factors. Developers can rapidly build natively compiled C++ apps that connect these devices across any form factor using FireUI Multi-Device Designer and user interface (UI) components. With Appmethod, developers can create apps for Android, iOS, Windows and OS X that interconnect with IoT via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi app tethering.

Appmethod–s REST Debugger tool can be used to generate REST Components, enabling developers to rapidly connect their application to gadgets and devices, such as the Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt and VeraLite Smart Home Controller. Using Appmethod–s FireMonkey UI components, developers can build the UI with gesture-enabled (swiping) applications. Only a few lines of code are needed to connect application logic to the REST API calls.

The VeraLite Smart Home Controller app displays a –Lock– or –Unlock– icon on the screen, and swiping between the two icons will lock/unlock the Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt respectively. Each time the user swipes the application, the lock/unlock command is sent wirelessly to the VeraLite controller which in turn commands the deadbolt to lock/unlock remotely. The SmartCode Deadbolt with Home Connect Technology featuring Z-Wave enables the door lock to wirelessly communicate with other devices in home. The lock allows the user, through a web enabled device, to remotely check the door lock status, lock or unlock the door and receive text or email messages.

Embarcadero is highlighting the benefits that Appmethod delivers to developers who want to create apps for the myriad new IoT devices available in the market, including wearables, devices, gadgets, sensors and cloud services. IoT devices featured to date in the “Developing the Internet of Things Showcase” include:
