Government of Canada Renews Its Investment in CANARIE: $105M for 5 Year Mandate

OTTAWA, ONTARIO — (Marketwired) — 04/21/15 — CANARIE, a vital component of Canada–s national digital infrastructure supporting research, education and innovation, today announced $105 million in new funding for the period 2015 – 2020, following the presentation of the Government of Canada–s Economic Action Plan 2015 in the House of Commons.

“I want to thank the Government of Canada for its ongoing investment in CANARIE and its confidence in the organization as it evolves key components of our national digital infrastructure,” says Grant Farmer, Chairman of the Board of CANARIE. “This enables Canadians in higher education, research and business to leverage a range of advanced technologies to support our growing digital economy.”

Ubiquitous digital technologies and an accelerating rate of data creation have made advanced digital infrastructure and tools essential for Canadians who use them to create new knowledge, processes and businesses. This funding decision acknowledges the continually changing landscape in research, education and innovation and the need for ongoing investments to ensure Canada remains competitive.

“I want to thank our partners and stakeholders for their support and continued guidance,” says Jim Ghadbane, President and CEO of CANARIE. “We look forward to working with the community to evolve the ecosystem to ensure our national digital infrastructure enables groundbreaking innovations that deliver social and economic benefits to all Canadians.”

CANARIE moves into its next mandate with an overarching goal of strengthening Canada–s digital infrastructure ecosystem. The components of the ecosystem include data, networks, compute facilities and software, and CANARIE will work with partners delivering these components to strengthen the alignment and integration among them.
