SKODA AUTO Drives Innovation and Automotive Advancements Powered by New SGI Supercomputer

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM and MILPITAS, CA — (Marketwired) — 03/06/16 — SGI (NASDAQ: SGI), a global leader in high-performance solutions for compute, data analytics, and data management, today announced that ŠKODA AUTO a.s., launched into operation a and two high performance computing (HPC) systems to further enhance its computer-aided engineering capabilities.

ŠKODA AUTO is one of the world–s oldest car manufacturers and draws on 110 years of production expertise. The new installation will integrate with ŠKODA AUTO–s existing SGI supercomputer to reach over 30,000 Intel® Xeon® E5 family processor cores.

Car manufacturers are under increasing pressure to reduce costs and increase quality throughout the entire design cycle. The use of virtual prototyping software and HPC systems allows them to validate a design before committing to making expensive physical prototypes. The newest SGI installation will continue to provide ŠKODA AUTO with a unified compute, storage and services solution that tackles their most demanding CAE workloads, maximizes engineering productivity and speeds up the time to market.

“Customer satisfaction and the highest standard of production are at the very core of our brand and is the driving force behind our innovation processes,” said Petr Rešl, head of IT Services, ŠKODA AUTO. “This latest installation enables us to conduct complex product performance and safety analysis that will in turn help us to further our commitment to our customer–s welfare and ownership experience. It helps us develop more innovative vehicles at an excellent value-to-price ratio.”

Along with an extensive supercomputing system launch into operation, ŠKODA AUTO also continues in professional services cooperation with SGI which includes dedicated on-site customer support personnel to help oversee the HPC systems and deploy ŠKODA AUTO specific advanced CAE computing workflows.

“ŠKODA AUTO has been a highly valued customer at SGI for many years and this new purchase builds upon a long-standing relationship between us,” said Gabriel Broner, vice president and general manager of high performance computing, SGI. “Our SGI systems will allow ŠKODA AUTO to continue to make great strides in developing safer automobiles and improving time to market.”
