Nearly 10 Billion Robocalls Have Been Made to U.S. Consumers So Far in 2016

IRVINE, CA — (Marketwired) — 05/25/16 — The numbers are staggering, and we–re not even halfway through the year. In the first four months of 2016, approximately 10 billion robocalls were placed to U.S. phones. The relentless rise of these annoying, automated calls is chronicled in the latest report released today by . The leading provider of intelligent telecommunications services for consumers and small businesses, YouMail predicts that the number of robocalls made to American consumers will reach an astronomical 30 billion by the end of the year. That averages out to almost 100 calls per year to every man, woman and child in the country.

Robocalls cause far more than simple annoyance. Autodialed calls negatively affect productivity and open the door for fraudulent activities and crime to be committed against unsuspecting citizens. And, their numbers are rising at an unprecedented pace. At this time last year, approximately 1.65 billion robocalls were made — meaning that they have increased in volume by 50 percent on a year-over-year basis.

Interestingly, less than four million robocall-related complaints are made annually to the FCC. That–s quite a low number compared to the massive scale of the problem. People may feel that they have no recourse against robocalls, but that doesn–t have to be the case. YouMail gives consumers their power back.

How does YouMail provide protection against robocallers? YouMail–s intelligent answering service convinces autodialers that the number they called is disconnected, which gets YouMail subscribers taken off lists completely, so they don–t get called again by any of the phone numbers a particular company or group of companies might use. YouMail works on Apple iOS and Android-based smartphones, as well as landlines. The service includes a proprietary technology called that detects robocall call patterns, including those generated by spoofing systems, and plays an “out of service” message that tricks those callers into thinking that the subscriber–s number has been disconnected. It–s more effective than using the “block” function on an iPhone or “reject” list on an Android phone, which only enables you to block one number at a time. However, debt collectors and scammers may have hundreds of different numbers they use to call people.

In this day and age, intelligent voicemail features, such as those provided by YouMail, are a necessity rather than a luxury. “You simply can–t afford to answer phone calls from blocked numbers or numbers you don–t recognize,” notes Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail. “If you do, you–ve let the machine on the other end know that they have reached an active number. Now, your name will get added to more lists, and you–ll receive exponentially more unwanted calls. If you do make the mistake of answering a robocall, your best bet is to hang up as soon as you hear the first recorded words. With YouMail, you just ignore numbers you don–t know and let them roll to YouMail, and it will get you taken off those call lists.”

Below are April–s top 50 most robocalled cities, listed in order. Atlanta has the dubious distinction of topping the list for the fifth month in a row, and is on a pace itself for over 1 billion robocalls this year. How does your city rank?

Despite the pervasiveness of robocalls, there was no definitive data made available that gives consumers or lawmakers a sense for how big the problem really is — until YouMail created the Robocall Index. YouMail–s Robocall Index is a free monthly report that tracks robocall volumes across the U.S. The report highlights the top phone numbers robocalls are placed from, the most robocalled cities, and the most common types of robocalls. The data is based on callers blocked and/or reported as spam by millions of YouMail subscribers nationwide, and on YouMail–s algorithms for detecting automatically dialed calls. Having answered billions and billions of calls for its users, YouMail is uniquely positioned to aggregate this national call data for the Robocall Index.
