Assuring a long life – PCI cards and proven operating systems

The latest generation of Intel® processors and chipsets often support exclusively Windows® 10 IoT as operating system. In addition, today–s industrial hardware has only limited access to slots of proven bus standards such as PCI. How can PCI cards and existing drivers for Windows® XP or 7 still be used? Both issues are solved by ICP Deutschland–s Cloud-based IPC TANK-860-QGW. On the one hand, the hardware provides enough PCI expansion slots; on the other hand, older operating systems can be operated on current hardware thanks to integrated virtualization software. The required application – Virtualization Station is already pre-installed on the Cloud IPC and is supported by the embedded Linux operating system QTS. The Virtualization Station uses physical-to-virtual (P2V) technology to create virtual machines with just a few clicks. Up to four different operating systems (Windows® XP / 7 / 8.1, etc.) can be used simultaneously as guest operating systems. On the hardware side, Intel® VT-d technology ensures direct I/O access to PCI and PCIe devices. If multiple virtual machines are in use, the individual PCI and PCIe cards can be assigned to a specific virtual machine. When the signal is looped through, the performance is almost completely retained. With cloud-based IPCs, ICP Germany provides a helpful retrofit solution that makes users independent of software and hardware compatibilities and significantly extends the life cycle of older expansion cards.
