Curriki Receives $3 Million Donation

CUPERTINO, CA — (Marketwire) — 09/21/11 — Curriki, the leading K-12 global community for creating, sharing, and finding open learning resources, today announced it received a $3 million charitable contribution from Scott and Susan McNealy-s family foundation. The gift will benefit hundreds of thousands of educators and millions of students in the U.S. and around the world by giving them free access to more than 44,000 classroom-tested and peer-reviewed K-12 lessons, units, educational videos and games, and full courses.

“It is time to graduate from expensive, proprietary and static curricula that is printed and bound in the past,” said Scott McNealy, Curriki board member and former Sun Microsystems CEO. “Districts can-t afford them, nor do they accommodate the academic demands our teachers are currently facing. Students today are raised on technology. Curriculum must support how students interact, learn and share. Curriki leverages technology and the global community to deliver world-class education to everyone via open source digital learning resources.” This gift is one of several contributions the McNealy family foundation has made to Curriki.

Access to quality curricula depends on school districts- budgets, and recent years have seen a sharp decline in available monies to support students, including funds allocated to developing engaging curriculum.

“Scott and Susan McNealy believe deeply in the importance of a high-quality education for everyone,” said Curriki Chairman and CEO Kim Jones. “The McNealy-s generous contribution to Curriki will ensure that Curriki continues to evolve every day with new members, new ideas, new features and tools on the website and new high quality educational resources that will ultimately improve teacher effectiveness and student outcomes.”
