Maersk Line Hires HP: Managing the Workplace Revolution

Top Line: Changing technologies and demographics are revolutionizing the workplace, and enterprises must mange this
Danish shipping giant Maersk Line has just signed a five-year contract with HP, worth over DKK 800 million, with the aim of helping Maersk becoming an “instant-on enterprise” by using HP-s cloud datacenter and HP workplace services. HP is taking over more than 500 Maersk employees and will provide services desk, remote management, monitoring, image load, managed print services, and local application support services for Maersk-s workplaces.
Bottom Line for ICT Buyers:
1. “Consumerization” of IT (employees introducing personal devices and social media into the workplace) and changing workforce demographics are transforming how work gets done in enterprises – this bring advantages, but challenges too, and even threats (not least in data security). “Gen-X” employees bring new ways of looking at problems but also new attitudes towards (and expectations of) technology. Employees of every age are becoming far more mobile and far more demanding of the IT they use in the workplace.
2. IDC believes that in the future, BYOD (bring your own device) and “consumerization” of IT will become increasingly important issues for enterprises to manage. We expect growing demand from European enterprises for services that help them manage these issues, for example desktop virtualization and the rollout and management of unified communications.
3. These issues must be high on the agenda when enterprises review ICT strategies, so that organizations are well prepared to address the potentially difficult management of device proliferation. Ignoring the workplace revolution is not an option.
