-School-Run- Vehicles Are Susceptible to Monday Morning Breakdowns, Says CTEK

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 07/03/12 — According to global brand CTEK, vehicles that are used predominantly for infrequent and short journeys, such as the -school-run-, are the most vulnerable to not starting on Monday morning, necessitating a regular weekend routine.

Furthermore, as the summer school holidays approach, some family cars may be used even less than usual, meaning they are being left open to the chance of a battery failure or battery related breakdown. After a vehicle-s engine has been switched off, a number of functions continue to draw power from the battery, such as the alarm and clock; this, paired with short journeys, can lead to a low battery charge. Under these conditions, or if a battery is coming to the end of its life, just two days of a vehicle being unused can result in it not starting – having to call a breakdown service is a major inconvenience when children need to get to school.

Not only are Mondays the busiest days of the week for breakdowns, according to the AA-s review of UK breakdown incidents it attended last year, but battery related call-outs are also the most common. These call-outs totalled approximately 450,000 in 2011 and in 2010, when the British weather was much colder, this figure was 17% higher; drivers whose vehicles are already susceptible to Monday breakdown must be even more prepared in the harsh winter months.

Jan-Ulf Soderberg, head of brand and marketing at CTEK, explains how Monday morning battery related breakdowns can be avoided for those drivers that often make short and infrequent journeys: “To help avoid having to call a breakdown service when getting the children to school is priority, vehicle owners can utilise a smart charger, especially during the weekend. Our chargers can be left connected as long as required when the car, motorbike or van is not in use and they are extremely simple to use. There is a CTEK charger for every type of vehicle and not only do they maintain the optimum level of charge but also condition the battery, helping to increase life expectancy and efficiency.”
