City of London School Selects Bradford Networks to Support BYOD Strategy

CAMBRIDGE, MA and HAMPSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 02/19/13 — , the best choice to enable secure network access for corporate issued and personal mobile devices, and Khipu Networks, a provider of cyber security solutions within the education sector, today announced that the City of London School (CLS) has deployed Bradford Networks- solution. The school is using Bradford Networks to automate mobile device registration and provide secure onboarding for its students, faculty and guests connecting to its wireless network, while enforcing security policy compliance.

Founded in 1834, the CLS is a prestigious independent day school for boys located in London, England. Today, the school provides day education to nearly 900 boys aged 10 to 18 and employs approximately 200 teaching staff and faculty.

In early 2012, CLS installed a wireless network to enable staff and sixth form students (known in the US as juniors and seniors) to securely use both their personal and school-owned mobile devices for educational and personal purposes. The school also hosts external events and conferences, and wanted to be able to provide guests and contractors with secure access to a guest network. Following a review, CLS selected Bradford Networks for Network Access Control and Xirrus for the Wireless Arrays wireless network infrastructure.

For the purchase and deployment of Bradford Networks solution, CLS worked with Khipu Networks. CLS selected Bradford Networks because of its seamless integration with Xirrus and reputation as the NAC solution of choice for hundreds of education institutions. Additionally, Khipu Networks has extensive experience with Bradford Networks, having deployed it at more than 100 educational institutions across the UK.

“We wanted to provide wireless access as part of our student satisfaction efforts, and the combination of Bradford Networks and Xirrus enables us to do this while giving us the peace of mind and security we needed,” said Joe Mathews, assistant IT manager, City of London School. “The deployment of Bradford Networks went extremely smoothly thanks to Khipu Networks. We-ve had no support calls and we forget that it-s actually installed, which in the IT world is quite a bonus. We were especially impressed with the seamless integration with Xirrus. It-s very impressive when two large companies work in harmony.”

CLS deployed Bradford Networks in time for the start of the 2012 autumn term. It enables students to automatically and securely log onto the network in their common room, and lets teachers incorporate mobile applications running on iPads and Apple TVs into their classroom curriculum. The school also uses mobile devices to take classroom attendance which significantly simplifies this process.

When a user logs onto the network, Bradford Networks automatically and seamlessly checks the device for an up-to-date operating system and anti-virus software, and then provides appropriate network access based on the user-s role, device type and physical location in the building. If the device is noncompliant, the user is redirected to a web page for remediation. Additionally, through Bradford Networks, authorized guests can now get a user name and password to access the guest network from the school-s receptionist, offloading this time-consuming task from IT, while unauthorized personnel who attempt to log in are automatically prohibited from accessing the network.

The deployment has been so successful that CLS plans to expand the use of Bradford Networks to additional grades across the school.

“With BYOD gaining significant momentum, educational institutions must enable the use of personal devices across their campuses to provide the best educational experience and ensure student and staff satisfaction,” said Tom Murphy, CMO, Bradford Networks. “The seamless integration between Xirrus and Bradford Networks is highly valued by organizations such as CLS who clearly understand the value of the BYOD Blueprint, which combines the benefits of mobility, security and mobile device management solutions with NAC to address BYOD-s unique challenges.”

“We are extremely pleased to have successfully completed the project with the CLS team,” said Matt Ashman, co-founder and sales director, Khipu Networks. “As one of top schools in the UK, CLS understands the value of utilizing technology as part of the education experience by enabling its staff and students to use the mobile devices of their choice, without comprising network security.”
