HP Helps Moscow Railways Increase Quality, Safety of Suburban Rail Transport

MOSCOW — (Marketwire) — 03/14/13 — HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced that (MZD) has established new quality and safety levels for its suburban transportation network with a single automated management system based on software.

MZD, an affiliate of JSC Russian Railways, is responsible for 60.4 percent of suburban transportation across Russia, transporting an average of 1.4 million passengers every day. MZD manages a total of 8,000 miles (13,000 km) of track, 585 units of rolling stock, more than 4,000 train drivers and assistants, more than 2,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals, and 1,800 platform gates.

HP Service Manager helps create a more secure environment for all of MZD-s passengers. As well as ensuring that transportation safety measures are in place at platforms, pavilions, stations, POS terminals, suburban train salons and rolling stock depots, it enables a timely reaction to security incidents. MZD-s intelligent video surveillance system continuously monitors the time passengers spend in the areas under control and — should any delayed service come to light — creates an incident in HP Service Manager to help advance passenger logistics.

“We needed a common multifunctional center to manage the entire suburban complex,” said Vladimir Yakunin, president, JSC Russian Railways. “The new system will enable both the passenger companies providing transportation services and Russian Railways as the infrastructure company to work at maximum efficiency by speeding up decision making, improving management and cutting costs.”

HP partner I-Teco worked with HP and MZD-s project team to consolidate and unify all administration functions into an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)-based framework with HP Service Manager at the core. Management processes and technologies across the suburban transport hub are automated and aligned for accurate, consolidated analytical data gathering.

HP Service Manager now logs all MZD-s trains and routes, as well as resources like rolling stock and locomotive staff, in a single system. In case of a late arrival, HP Service Manager gets an alert, and appropriate changes are made within the change-management process, ensuring that passengers are advised of schedule changes in advance.

Among the innovations enabled by HP Service Manager is a new suburban infrastructure visualization system that allows MZD to view infrastructure elements and tasks on a 3-D map of the rail network. As well as facilitating better scheduling and faster incident response, this enables more efficient management of passenger traffic, improves decision making and increases safety.

“Moscow Railways was looking for a robust, flexible platform that would not only enable fast response to everyday incidents, but also work closely with the Central Information Office of RZD,” said Alexander Mikoyan, vice president and managing director, HP Russia. “HP-s unique offering has enabled MZD to build a single management framework for the entire suburban transportation network, which ensures optimum quality of service for rail users.”
