When It Comes to Career Sites, Most Companies Are Unprepared to Handle Rise in Mobile Web Traffic

HORSHAM, PA — (Marketwire) — 03/27/13 — , delivering a highly scalable that enables companies to recruit, retain and engage their talent, today announced the second edition of its Corporate Mobile Readiness Report, which analyzes the mobile career sites of Fortune 500 companies.

In 2011, the number of smartphones sold exceeded the number of personal computers. By mid-2012, mobile internet traffic surpassed desktop internet in India and China and consistent with these overall trends, one in five job searches on Google — the first place job seekers tend to go when searching for open positions — are from a mobile device.

“As smartphone use continues to grow exponentially, providing candidates with the ability to search for and apply to jobs from their mobile devices can no longer be seen as a special feature. Instead, companies should recognize the enormous opportunity mobile technology provides in enhancing their talent acquisition strategy and strive to provide an optimized mobile candidate experience,” said Mahe Bayireddy, CEO and co-founder of iMomentous. “Using the Fortune 500 as a representative sample, our new report examines how well today-s companies are prepared to meet such rising demand for a mobile apply process — and how far they still have to go to achieve full mobile optimization.”

Following the release of its inaugural Corporate Mobile Readiness Report in July 2012, in which iMomentous visited the websites of the Fortune 500 with an iPhone to gauge their mobile job candidate experience, the company revisited those same sites to update its findings in January 2013. Rated on factors such as the existence of a formal mobile-optimized corporate website, a mobile-optimized career section and mobile apply process, companies were ranked in one of five categories: Front Runner, Early Stage, Treading Water, Toe in the Water and Off the Radar.

iMomentous- research shows that although progress has been made in the last six months, very few companies are taking a comprehensive and strategic approach to ensure a consistent brand experience on the mobile web. Other key findings of the report include:

The number of Front Runners has risen from just one company in the July 2012 report to seven in January 2013. The Front Runners that provide an optimized mobile candidate experience are: McDonalds, Macy-s, AT&T, Google, Prudential, General Motors and Masco.

Overall, a vast number of the Fortune 500 (220) are considered Off the Radar, lacking any form of mobile-optimized career site or apply process.

Although the adoption rate of mobile career sites has increased by 157 percent, the number of mobile-optimized corporate sites grew by only 16 percent. This signifies a wider disconnect between corporate sites and career sections.

Only 39 of the 167 mobile corporate sites among the Fortune 500 link to a career section, and a mere 13 of those career sections are mobile optimized. This indicates that the people responsible for corporate brand and HR personnel lack coordination in their efforts.

The number of companies that offer a mobile apply process increased just slightly from 2 percent to 3 percent, signifying that the Fortune 500 is still relatively unprepared for the rapid increase of mobile web traffic.

“While our second Corporate Mobile Readiness Report showed that companies in the Fortune 500 have made some improvements, in terms of a larger amount of mobile-optimized career sites, there is still a long way to go to meet the demands of an increasingly mobile talent pool,” said Ed Newman, vice president of Strategy for iMomentous. “As mobile traffic continues to grow, organizations must treat their mobile sites as a core part of the brand experience and we applaud McDonalds, Macy-s, AT&T, Google, Prudential, GM and Masco for acting holistically and advancing the candidate experience.” He continued, “If other companies continue to view their mobile websites as an experiment rather than a key part of their overall business strategy, they will miss out on the ever-growing number of candidates who prefer to apply for jobs using mobile devices.”
