SDN and Open Technology Luminaries Join Pertino Advisory Council

LOS GATOS, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/09/13 — , a company reinventing networking for the cloud era, today named three technology experts, Software-Defined Network (SDN) visionary Guru Parulkar, renowned networking analyst Nicholas (“Nick”) J. Lippis III, and open technology advocate and Information Systems professor J.P. Allen, as founding members of the Pertino Advisory Council (PAC). The new PAC board of advisors will help inform and guide Pertino in executing its SDN cloud platform vision and becoming a catalyst for democratizing IT for small and medium businesses (SMBs) worldwide.

The addition of renowned SDN and open technology luminaries as advisors to its PAC program is the latest sign of momentum from Pertino. In the first quarter of 2013, the company launched limited availability of the Pertino cloud network engine and closed $20 million in Series B funding.

“From the onset, Pertino has been about bringing the benefits of SDN technology to the masses, not just the mavens, and impacting the success of SMBs by enabling their people and processes to be connected from anywhere, anytime,” said Craig Elliott, CEO and co-founder of Pertino. “We are thrilled and honored to have SDN and open technology veterans such as Guru, Nick and J.P. join the Pertino Advisory Council to help us make our aspirations a reality.”

Guru Parulkar is the executive director of the Open Networking Laboratory (ON.lab) and is a consulting professor and executive director of the Open Network Resource Center (ONRC) at the Stanford University School of Engineering. He has over 25 years of networking-related experience, including academic work at Washington University in St. Louis prior to Stanford, and private sector experience at several startups, Cisco, and the National Science Foundation. While at Stanford, Guru helped create three seminal programs: SDN and OpenFlow, Programmable Open Mobile Internet (POMI) 2020, and the Stanford Experimental Data Center Laboratory (SEDL).

“SDN represents the most transformational shift to networking in decades and promises to bring networking into the cloud era,” said Guru Parulkar, executive director of Open Networking Research Center. “While much of the early innovation has been focused on the datacenter networks, Pertino is helping to demonstrate SDN-s true potential by applying it to the wide-area network and bringing its benefits to businesses of all sizes.”

J.P. Allen was the founding department chair of the University of San Francisco (USF) Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship department, and before that served as a faculty member at Purdue University and the University of Cambridge. His research centers around understanding the impact of online/Internet business, open technology, and the digital transformation on businesses, organizations and society. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Information Technology and the International Journal of Electronic Commerce.

“Networks have far-reaching implications on society and business and make communications, collaboration, and commerce possible,” said J.P. Allen, associate professor of Information Systems at USF-s School of Management. “Despite these implications, many businesses lack the money and expertise to build a business network or extend their current one to meet changing needs. I-m excited to be part of Pertino-s effort to make networking more open, affordable, and accessible to any size business anywhere in the world.”

Nick Lippis is a world-renowned authority on advanced IP networks and a thought-leader in today-s open network movement. Nick is the publisher of the Lippis Report — a resource for network and IT business decision makers with over 35,000 executive subscribers, and a co-founder of the Open Network Users Group (ONUG). He has designed some of the largest computer networks in the world and has advised many Global 2000 firms on network strategy, architecture, and implementation. Nick was named one of the, “Top 40 Most Powerful and Influential People in the Networking Industry,” by Network World and is an advisory board member to the Dean of Engineering at Boston University where he is also a recipient of the prestigious College of Engineering Alumni award for advancing the profession.

Today, the company also announced that Elliott will present on a on April 16 at 2:30 p.m. PT at the Open Networking Summit at the Santa Clara Convention Center and Hyatt in Santa Clara, Calif.

Founded in 2011, Pertino has an inspired vision for reinventing networking for the cloud era, and in the process, being a catalyst for . Globalization, cloud-enabled IT, and growing demand for always-connected people, devices, and things is affecting businesses of all sizes — making the “outside network” as critical as the inside one. However, traditional wide-area networks have not kept pace. Pertino-s revolutionary cloud network engine enables any business to build a simple and secure cloud-based network that connects people and IT resources from anywhere on the planet. No new hardware. No expertise. No upfront investment. To achieve this breakthrough, Pertino has developed a software platform that combines the power and pervasiveness of the cloud with Software-defined Network (SDN) and network virtualization technology, and a social-inspired user management paradigm. The company is venture funded and headquartered in Los Gatos, Calif. For more information or to try Pertino for yourself, please visit .
