IT safety for approved support access

More and more often IT support, application maintenance and other internal IT functions within enterprises are transferred and executed by external specialists. This trend follows the complete out tasking of IT departments.
A consequence of the trend is the requirement of third parties to access data processing systems remotely “from the outside” using a high privilege account. “SessionAudit for RealVNC (Virtual Network Computing)” and “SessionAudit for RDP (RemoteDesktopProtocol)”, new software programs from SideQuest, were developed in order to log these authorized external accesses and to record all users- keyboard and mouse activities within a support session. This allows the enterprise to reconstruct at any time the support activities of third parties and offer an exhaustive and complete audit trail. The solution requires an independent PC, which acts as a Proxy behind the Firewall of the enterprise, in front of the production systems. The software can be configured in such a way that if the audit system is not available, external access is prevented. All relevant data packets, generated during the support session, are recorded until the session is terminated.
Using the session viewer, the enterprise now has the possibility to replay all user interactions within the selected session. The representation corresponds to a 1:1 screen of the person interacted within that session. Stored as AVI or MPEG the session can be be often replayed like a video, including fast forwards and fast reverse. SessionAudit can also be installed directly on any maintenance-relevant PC, allowing a complete audit of sessions initiated from outside.
