Lightning Activity in the Central United States

BOULDER, CO — (Marketwired) — 06/13/13 — Are you Weather-Ready? Lightning Safety Week starts on June 23!

Vaisala-s (HEX: VAIAS) U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) has been operational for over 30 years, and has the longest archive of lightning data. Statistics from this unique dataset provide a comprehensive view of lightning activity over the United States, which is highly valued for lightning safety, risk management, and severe weather analysis.

In the central U.S., the highest average lightning frequency is in Louisiana around New Orleans. Another area of high flash density is in eastern Oklahoma and Kansas. Much of the lightning occurs during June, July, and August, and lightning starts in late morning along the Gulf Coast, whereas storms over the Plains start forming in the afternoon. The attached PDF document shows a lightning density map, lightning fatality numbers, and insurance claims. The same information is also available for other regions of the United States.
