Canadian IaaS Uses Boundary for OpenStack Cloud Management

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/24/13 — -s real-time Operations IT management software as a service is now monitoring an OpenStack-based private cloud project for , an Alberta, Canada-based not-for-profit. Cybera manages , the high-speed research and education network in Alberta.

The news confirms Boundary-s capabilities in monitoring , one of the fastest-growing open source cloud platforms. The platform is supported by more than 180 companies including the software-s original founders NASA and Rackspace, as well as Cisco, Dell, HP and IBM. OpenStack is designed for institutions and service providers with physical hardware that they want to use for large-scale cloud deployments or for companies with requirements that prevent them from running in a public cloud.

Cybera has created the (LMC) for Alberta post-secondary institutions looking to share computing resources for their learning management systems, such as Moodle, an open source application for organizing online courses. The organization was looking for tools to monitor cloud applications in real time, and needed insight into the network layer that its IT team couldn-t find in any available tools.

“There is a lot of data flowing in and out of that cloud, and the monitoring tools that we had to manage it are very limited,” says Luke Tymowski, a systems administrator at Cybera. “Boundary is unique in the network and application monitoring space. There isn-t another tool or service that can do the same thing.” Because Cybera-s mandate is to build and demonstrate the practicality of open source cloud infrastructure, it didn-t want to run on commercial cloud infrastructure and when the company began the project, there weren-t any viable Canadian-based commercial cloud providers, according to Tymowski. Cybera-s staff built the first OpenStack-powered project in Canada in early 2011, and used their OpenStack and Puppet experience to quickly build and deploy the LMC project.

Beyond helping to monitor the OpenStack infrastructure, Boundary is helping Cybera track potential breaches or attacks, possibly indicated by traffic from countries outside of Canada. Boundary-s data visualizations are also useful, helping the organization compare traffic hour-by-hour or week-by-week, to optimize the infrastructure and maintain its 99.99% uptime, Tymowski says. “Boundary helped us find a tertiary backup server that was consuming far more bandwidth than expected. Without Boundary, we wouldn-t have easily noticed the problem.”

“Working with Cybera has been an exciting journey for Boundary, given the growing role of open source cloud technologies,” says Gary Read, President and CEO of Boundary. “As well, the provider-s stringent security requirements from its government and academic clients shows that Boundary is a valuable service for risk management and IP protection.”

Cybera is a non-profit organization that operates Alberta-s advanced research network, CyberaNet, a high-speed, high-bandwidth system connecting local researchers to some 80 research networks around the world. Cybera pilots emerging technologies, such as cloud computing, data portals, and Internet buying collectives, in conjunction with public and private sector partners, to seed Alberta-based economic growth. Cybera is located in Calgary and Edmonton, and is funded by , as well as its members. Learn more at

has developed the first central intelligence service for modern IT operations management. The service analyzes and correlates per-second application traffic “chatter” with inputs from third-party IT management tools, to provide IT operations teams with early warnings on application and cloud failures. Boundary users can now monitor their entire IT environments from a single cloud-based dashboard that is updated every second, improving business agility and reducing management costs. Named a “Cool Vendor for DevOps” by Gartner, Boundary is privately-held and based in San Francisco, California, with venture funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Scale Venture Partners.
