DataTorrent Announces Release of First Hadoop-Based Real-Time Big Data Streaming Platform to Developers

SAN JOSE, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/26/13 — DataTorrent today announced the release of Developer and Evaluation versions of its new DataTorrent platform — the first Big Data platform built exclusively on Hadoop — to power instantaneous data processing, analytics and action for businesses.

Coinciding with the platform launch is another announcement released today that DataTorrent has raised $8 million in a Series A round of funding. DataTorrent-s round was led by August Capital with participation from Morado Ventures, AME Cloud Ventures and Farzad Nazem.

Unlike traditional batch processing that can literally take hours, DataTorrent executes at tens of millions of data items per second, providing businesses with unparalleled access to data instantaneously. Now for the first time, Big Data users can have access to NowTime processing, NowTime monitoring and alerts for any business metrics and make NowTime decisions and responses to events.

“DataTorrent allows any business to take action on events happening as they occur, thereby eliminating the long gap between finding out what-s happening and being able to act on that data,” said Phu Hoang, co-founder and CEO of DataTorrent. “Not only does DataTorrent put the power of Hadoop and real time information at the fingertips of businesses, but it enables them to act on it in real time.”

It-s a foregone conclusion that data has proliferated and velocity has continued to increase, with the onslaught driven by the growth in the number of mobile phones, financial transactions, advertising, social gaming, online payments, online sensors, and industrial sensors.

DataTorrent makes building real-time distributed applications quick and simple due to its built-in library of more than 250 Operators. Further, to foster innovation and creativity by the community, it is open sourcing the library of Operators and API through the Apache Software Foundation (ASF).

DataTorrent is a fully developed platform for real-time distributed applications. It can handle massive throughput, fault-tolerance, elasticity, and dynamic application change, all without user intervention. “These operational capabilities are essential for enterprises wanting to process data in production, so with DataTorrent, companies wishing to harness the power of Big Data applications only need to focus on the business logic and leave the rest to the platform,” said Amol Kekre, Co-Founder and CTO.

“DataTorrent has opened the door to a new, compelling means for leveraging real-time analytics by allowing companies to act on big data quickly,” said Eric Kavanagh, CEO of The Bloor Group. “What DataTorrent has done is innovative, and solves a serious need for businesses that have the wherewithal to capitalize on the full potential of big data.”

DataTorrent will be offered to developers on a Freemium basis. Developer and Evaluation versions are available for download at .

DataTorrent was founded by Phu Hoang, a 12-year Yahoo! veteran and former EVP of Engineering at Yahoo!, and Amol Kekre, who built the Yahoo! quotes streaming service and was a leader in the Hadoop efforts at Yahoo!. The Big Data and streaming DNA of the company is further strengthened since the team is comprised of people who built the Yahoo finance streaming service and key contributors to Hadoop.

DataTorrent, Inc., headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., offers enterprise customers the first Big Data platform built exclusively on Hadoop to power instantaneous data processing, analytics and action.
