Mount St. Mary College Addresses Rising Device Densities With a Meru Education-Grade (MEG(TM)) Wi-Fi Network

SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwired) — 08/20/13 — Meru Networks® (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in Wi-Fi networking, today announced that Mount St. Mary College (The Mount) in Newburgh, N.Y. is addressing sharply rising device densities, “always-on” students and faculty, and accompanying increases in network traffic with a campus-wide Meru Education-grade (MEG) Wi-Fi network.

IT leaders at The Mount note that the 2,700 students and 800 faculty members and staff spread across the 52-acre campus typically have more than 12,000 devices connected to the network, more than twice the number they had just three years ago. Frequency of use of the Wi-Fi network for classroom instruction has also risen sharply. Unlike years past, students and teachers are now “always on” and always moving. The school-s ability to provide high-performance uninterrupted learning has never been more critical.

“People aren-t just sitting in an office or class anymore, connected to a fixed access point. They-re walking — they go from class to class accessing information on their smart phones and iPads. It truly is a different era of wireless technology,” said Alex Valentin, director of technical services for Mount Saint Mary. “The single-channel, virtual cell option in the Meru MobileFLEX architecture supports the way that people use mobility now. With other solutions you-re constantly being released from one access point and then connecting to another — Meru lets users move with the stream.”

Meru-s MEG solution is designed to solve colleges- and universities- BYOD issues and support their uninterrupted learning applications. MEG starts with three simple steps:

1. Onboard quickly with BYOD provisioning and secure wireless access mapped to IT policies.
2. Connect all BYOD devices reliably anywhere on campus.
3. Learn by deploying validated learning and teaching applications over the MEG wireless platform.

The Mount was founded in 1959 and has been ranked a Top-Tier Regional University (North) by U.S. News & World Report. With more than 2,700 students, the college offers 47 undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. The Mount also offers master-s degrees in education, business and nursing.

The Mount deployed more than 300 Meru AP320s and AP332s to achieve full coverage for the campus. The school-s IT department also uses Meru-s E(z)RF for a range of purposes, from in-depth and seamless network management to locating lost devices for students and faculty.

Mount St. Mary is using its Wi-Fi network to proactively enable mobility for students, faculty and staff, with the realization that -always on- and -always roaming- are here to stay,” said Sarosh Vesuna, vice president and general manager of the education business unit at Meru. “Deploying Meru-s MEG mobility platform will enable The Mount to ensure the highest performance of uninterrupted learning for its students, even as device densities, network traffic and instructional use of the wireless network continue to increase.”
