Dale Begg-Smith Wins Olympic Silver in Moguls

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA — (Marketwired) — 10/09/13 — During the 119th I.O.C. Session held in Guatemala City in 2007, Russian Federation-s Sochi was selected to host the XXII Winter Olympic Games in February 2014. This will be the first Olympics for Russia with venues scattered over two clusters, a coastal cluster in Sochi Olympic Park and a mountain cluster on Krasnaya Polyana. The Games are set to feature 98 medal events over 15 winter sports including figure skating, snowboarding, ice hockey, cross-country and freestyle skiing to name a few. Krasnaya Polyana-s Rosa Khutor Extreme Park will hold snowboarding and freestyle skiing events. September 2012 marked the start of use for the newly constructed Rosa Khutor Extreme Park venue.

The previous Olympic Winter Games were hosted in 2010 by the Canadian city of Vancouver. On day 3 of the Olympics, men-s moguls were held at Cypress Bowl Ski Area. The Sunday qualifications event featured 30 athletes competing with the top 20 qualifiers advancing into the finals. Many promising skiers entered the event including Alexandre Bilodeau, Bryon Wilson, and Vincen Marquis. Also among the qualifying athletes was the Australian Olympic Gold Medalist Dale Begg-Smith who ranked fourth in the qualifications round placing him among the 20 finalists competing for the Olympic medal. Impacted by the knee injury he suffered in January 2009, which had him out of competition for 10 months, the Gold Medal Olympian came agonizingly close to defending his title in his second Olympic campaign as he won . Begg-Smith donated his World Cup prize money — reported to be around $13,670 — to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Following the Vancouver Olympics, won his fourth World Cup title in Sierra Nevada, Spain, as the greatest World Cup champion of all time. Begg-Smith made his first impact as a moguls skier in January 2001, finishing in 18th place in a World Cup event at the age of 16. Since then, he has made the podium at every major championship he has contested; he set the record for the most consecutive World Cup finals in events he has entered, by qualifying for 60 consecutive finals. He made history as he won the Olympic gold medal in 2006 by becoming the youngest man to ever win Olympic gold in the sport and Australia-s third gold for the Winter Olympics. In 2006, Australia issued a postage stamp commemorating Begg-Smith-s achievement.

Olympian Begg-Smith began skiing at a very early age as he grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. Alongside his older brother, Jason Begg-Smith, Dale trained tirelessly throughout his early career as they competed for Canada in various mogul skiing events. The brothers were unable to compete for three years while awaiting their Australian citizenship post moving to Australia in 2001. Following Dale-s Olympic Gold win in the 2006, where both brothers competed, Jason Begg-Smith retired from the sport while Dale went on to win Olympic Silver at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. He has since cemented his title as Australia-s most successful winter athlete and one of only five Australians to win a gold medal in the Winter Games alongside Olympians Steven Bradbury, Alisa Camplin, Torah Bright, and Lydia Lassila.
