Calix Enables 50th Gigabit Network With Silver Star in Jackson, Wyoming

JACKSON, WY — (Marketwired) — 11/17/14 — (NYSE: CALX) today announced that has selected the Calix , and (ESAPs) and (ONTs) for its Gigabiz initiative in Jackson, Wyoming. With the expansion of Silver Star–s fiber network to deliver broadband speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) to both businesses and residents with a fiber connection, Jackson will become Wyoming–s first gigabit community. In addition, the partnership between Silver Star and Calix marks the 50th Calix-enabled gigabit network in the world.

“The Gigabiz initiative will be a game changer for Jackson, as the economic development possibilities are endless with this world-class fiber network in place,” said Ron McCue, President and COO of Silver Star Communications. “We are located in a rural and mountainous area, so gigabit speeds are crucial to our ability to compete with urban areas as a destination for businesses. As a long-time Calix customer, we are excited to be partnering together to deliver Wyoming–s first gigabit community, with more coming on the horizon, and take the next step to deliver Carrier-Class Wi-Fi to our customers through the GigaCenters.”

Silver Star has been committed to fiber in its serving area for many years, building out 120 miles of fiber since 2011 throughout western Wyoming and eastern Idaho. By interconnecting with the statewide fiber loops in both states, Silver Star has improved the level of broadband service for residents and business throughout the region. With its Gigabiz initiative, which is set to expand to other communities beyond Jackson, including to the nearby town of Thayne in the coming months, Silver Star is leveraging its ongoing investment in fiber to bring some of the best broadband speeds in the country to its customers.

“What a privilege it is that Jackson is going to be Wyoming–s first gigabit community, an exclusive infrastructure advantage for our businesses, residents and civic organizations. I am so proud that this investment is being made by Silver Star in Jackson,” said Mark Barron, mayor of Jackson.

In addition, Gigabiz subscribers will be some of the first in the country to enjoy a new connected gigabit lifestyle enabled by the GigaCenters, which deliver one Gbps symmetrical wireline services and blazing fast wireless speeds to all Wi-Fi enabled devices in the home via the latest 802.11ac “wave 2” Wi-Fi technology with 4×4 Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO).

“Silver Star Communications is a long-standing Calix customer who has continually challenged itself to bring cutting-edge fiber services to its subscribers, despite being located in one of the toughest areas in the country to deploy,” said John Colvin, senior vice president of North American sales at Calix. “Gigabiz extends that commitment to excellence to gigabit services, and thrusts the town of Jackson into the rarefied air of –gigabit cities– globally. By complementing this network with Calix GigaCenters, Silver Star is staking another claim as one of the first Carrier Class Wi-Fi communities in the world, and extending the world-class Gigabiz experience to the wireless and wireline domains.”

The Silver Star Gigabiz network marks the 50th Calix-enabled gigabit community. Over the past two years, Calix has been partnering with all types of service providers, including incumbent carriers, competitive carriers, municipalities, utilities, electric cooperatives, and cable companies to deliver gigabit services to customers and unleash the power of their fiber networks.
