New Ovum Report Ranks BTI Among the World–s Top Vendors in the Data Center Interconnect Market

OTTAWA, ON and BOSTON, MA — (Marketwired) — 06/01/15 — , a market-leading provider of cloud and metro networking software and systems to content and service providers around the world, today announced that telecom research provider Ovum–s recent report, Opportunities for Optical Data Center Interconnect, identifies BTI as the third-largest provider of Data Center Interconnect (DCI) solutions to Internet Content Providers (ICPs) and Carrier-Neutral Providers (CNPs). ICPs include over-the-top (OTT), Web 2.0 and digital media companies; CNPs include colocation providers and multi-tenant data center operators.

“Given the new data, BTI is confident that we have captured the largest metro market share within ICPs and CNPs,” said Sally Bament, senior vice president of global marketing at BTI Systems. “BTI sells exclusively into the metro DCI space — while market share figures in the report for the number one and two players respectively, Infinera and Ciena, combine their long-haul business with their metro sales.”

“BTI has become a major player in the market by delivering high-capacity, compact-form-factor equipment purpose-built for cloud networking,” said Ron Kline, principal analyst for Intelligent Networks at Ovum. “BTI recognized early the need for this new class of networking gear for scaling to 100G and above. Additionally, it recognized the need to integrate packet processing and MPLS routing features with optical transport to reduce OPEX and to drive new sources of revenue.”

Why has the DCI market taken off so rapidly? The trends Ovum identifies as driving the DCI market include the evolution of IT to a cloud environment, leading to a staggering impact on data center ecosystems. Traditional carriers, ICPs and CNPs relay to Ovum that the demand for managed cloud offerings is growing exponentially. The other trend affecting bandwidth consumption is the proliferation of video on both mobile and fixed networks; to combat latency, providers continue to build out content delivery networks to store this content closer to end-user customers.

These trends make DCI the fastest-growing application segment for optical networking equipment. According to Ovum, DCI revenues grew 16.2 percent in 2014, representing a $2.5 billion market, which is expected to reach $4.2 billion in 2019. ICPs and CNPs will comprise the largest segment, slated to grow at a 12 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

“As an industry pioneer, BTI entered the DCI market in 2011 with its high-density, compact footprint optical transport systems,” Bament said. “As the DCI space evolves, networks remain under incredible bandwidth constraints. Our customers continue to demand network solutions that add more value than just pure point-to-point. BTI identified this requirement early on and continues to deliver industry firsts that enable content providers, colocation providers and service providers to drive new, high-capacity services more quickly and at lower costs, all with best-in-class space, power and network utilization efficiencies.”

BTI–s software-defined platform delivers massive scale, improved efficiencies and rapid services innovation to networks that until now have been closed, static and hardware-centric. Customers — including Pacnet, CyrusOne, Interxion, Rackspace, IPC, VK and many more leading cloud providers — have capitalized on the tremendous opportunities in cloud computing by leveraging BTI–s solutions to deliver high performance, scalability and improved economics.

BTI continues to capitalize on these market drivers — expanding customer data center builds and services adoption growth. With BTI–s open, converged Intelligent Cloud Connect platform, the company is at the forefront of supporting specialized applications such as cloud computing and virtualization, business continuity, content delivery and digital media delivery, among others.

BTI delivers solutions that transform the economics, performance and innovation of global networks through intelligent networking software and systems. Leading content, cloud and service providers choose BTI to drive improved operational efficiencies and profitably deliver high-value services to businesses and consumers around the globe. With more than 380 customers in over 40 countries, BTI is headquartered in North America, and operates regional sales, marketing, and R&D centers of excellence throughout the world.
