Engine Yard Selects DigitalOcean as Preferred Deis Development Environment

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 08/25/15 — Engine Yard, the leader in production deployment of Docker containers, today announced it has selected cloud infrastructure provider DigitalOcean as its preferred hosting infrastructure for developers working on the Deis open source Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Engine Yard will direct open source contributors working on Deis to use DigitalOcean–s developer-friendly hosting, which allows customers to create a cloud server in as little as 55 seconds.

Sealing the win-win nature of the move, in order to encourage open source contributions to Deis, DigitalOcean will provide free hosting credits to developers who have code merged into the mainline Deis project. These added incentives will make Deis and DigitalOcean even more attractive to software teams looking to deploy and manage Docker-based applications.

“We are thrilled that Engine Yard has been such a strong advocate for DigitalOcean,” said Edward Chiu, director of customer success at DigitalOcean. “Deis provides a streamlined workflow for managing distributed applications. It–s exactly the kind of developer-focused PaaS we love seeing built on top of our cloud. As we continue to grow and service more developers, tools like this will be invaluable.”

DigitalOcean — now the second largest hosting company in terms of web-facing computers, according to Internet services company Netcraft — has earned a reputation among developers as a friendly hosting platform for modern software teams. DigitalOcean–s cost-effective virtual computers (“droplets”) make it a natural fit for Deis contributors looking to code on large-scale clusters. For this reason, most of the Deis core team already uses DigitalOcean for internal development environments as it better reflects real-world production configurations.

“DigitalOcean–s simple web user interface and streamlined user experience stand in stark contrast to other public cloud vendors, which struggle to mask the complexity of their ever-changing suite of hosted solutions,” said Gabriel Monroy, creator of Deis and chief technology officer at Engine Yard. “Developers working on the Deis codebase already gravitate toward DigitalOcean, so we know it–s a terrific solution. We are thrilled to promote DigitalOcean as the best way to hack on Deis.”

Following this announcement, the Deis documentation will be updated to direct contributors to use DigitalOcean as the recommended development environment. When new contributors submit a pull request, they will be automatically provided information on how to collect and redeem DigitalOcean credits once the pull request is merged. The amount of credit received by each contributor will be based on the value of each contribution, as determined by the Deis project maintainers.

“Deis allows us to go from code to cloud in the simplest way possible on infrastructure we control,” said Josef Nevoral, director of engineering at Hotel Quickly. “By running our Deis cluster on DigitalOcean, Hotel Quickly gets a PaaS solution and an IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) solution that are both focused on making life easier for developers. We couldn–t be more excited to see Deis and DigitalOcean working closely together.”
