Will Power + Brain Power = The Power of Toronto–s Future

TORONTO, ONTARIO — (Marketwired) — 04/20/16 — Editors Note: There is a video associated with this press release.

Leaside High School, one of Toronto–s most sought-after public schools is set to reveal its robot at the 2016 Worldwide Robotics competition. A team of 17 students, ages 16-18, accompanied by teacher and parent volunteers, will be attending the VEX World Championship Conference from April 20-23, 2016 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, USA – organized by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation.

The VEX Robotics World Championship allows students to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in ways that are not only engaging, but relevant to their future. VEX Robotics World Championship affords students the opportunity to apply what they–ve learned in school to real-world situations in a competitive, fun and encouraging atmosphere. More importantly, it illustrates that progress is being made in an important nationwide effort to prepare students for jobs of tomorrow, and help solve many global issues around healthcare, natural disasters, etc., with the use of robotics.

“Our faculty and students are very proud to be representing Toronto in this global competition,” said Vincent Lu, staff advisor and mentor of the Leaside robotics club. Lu, alongside other teacher volunteers, spent hours coaching and encouraging students of Leaside to challenge their own creativity by developing a robot that could potentially save lives through challenge based problem-solving. “The students involved in LanceBotics are not only conscientious, but are so determined to try and build a product that can be retrofitted for various applications. From rescue missions, to constructing appropriate mechanisms that can perform intricate medical procedures such as spinal cord restoration – our students have the aspiration and desire to make a significant societal impact via their robotics endeavours.”

Leaside student and key member of Team LanceBotics, 16-year-old Devinder Singh-Jaglal says, “As a proud member of the LanceBotics team representing Toronto at the global VEX competition, our hope is that participants from around the world recognize what we at Leaside aim to achieve in advancing robotic solutions to assist in saving lives and solving some of the global challenges we face. The more students that get involved in this field at an early age, the better our chances are at building amazing game changing technology in the near future.”
