Portworx Introduces the Industry–s First Purpose-Built, Enterprise-Class Storage for Containers

REDWOOD CITY, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/14/16 — , the leading data storage company for containers, today announced , the industry–s first purpose-built, enterprise-class storage for containers.

While container technology has transformed application deployment, data storage has not kept pace. Containers are distributed and fast, while legacy storage is siloed and slow, and cannot be quickly provisioned or scaled to respond to changing container workloads. IT operations must contend with expensive solutions that lack per-container storage management, do not support container scalability and bursts, and are difficult to deploy. Portworx meets the need for container storage with its easy to deploy and manage PX-Enterprise solution, which enables IT to match the agility of application developers. More importantly, enterprises can cut the cost of traditional storage arrays and virtual machines by up to 70 percent. Portworx has seen early success with application use cases such as technical computing, databases (e.g., Cassandra, PostgreSQL, Hadoop, Spark), content management and video processing.

Containers have seen some of the fastest adoption rates of any datacenter technology in history. Most of the early use has been in the DevOps community, which Portworx serves with its free solution. However, as enterprises seek to utilize containers in production, there are new requirements for data persistence and management. PX-Enterprise ensures data persistence across nodes; allows storage policies such as class of service, IOPS and availability to be set at a container level; and provides container-granular snapshots and replication. The solution also enables enterprises to provision storage for containerized apps in seconds, not days; run storage at bare-metal speed; provision and schedule storage to automatically respond to container bursts; and manage storage features on a per-container basis.

“Portworx is addressing one the most pervasive issues in container technology: persistent storage that is multi-cloud ready,” said Henry Baltazar, 451 Research Director. “The company has given DevOps enterprise-class scalability, features, and hardware protection for their containerized applications, which can help these organizations leverage containers in production environments.”

With the debut of PX-Enterprise, Portworx removes the hurdles preventing containers from being used in production environments. Taking a fundamentally distributed approach, Portworx turns commodity X86 hardware into a converged storage node that can be rapidly scaled across a cluster of nodes and automatically provisioned with any Docker-ready scheduler.

“Like containers themselves, Portworx container-defined storage is radically simple, and the cost-savings are undeniable,” said Murli Thirumale, CEO and co-founder of Portworx. “For the first time, we–ve eliminated the complex and expensive decision of purchasing storage for containers in production. Portworx will enable enterprises of all sizes to realize the true potential of containers.”

Key features and benefits of PX-Enterprise include:

Scale-out block storage deployed as a container, which minimizes required resources

Container-granular controls for storage capacity, performance and availability

Container-granular snapshots, which require less storage capacity

Replication, which adds an extra measure of redundancy

The ability to deploy in the cloud, on-premises or both, thus preventing vendor lock-in

A RESTful API and a command-line interface, which allows easy deployment and integration with containers

Unified storage with a global file namespace that makes storage easy to deploy and manage

Multi-cluster visibility for unified storage management

Predictive capacity management that provides proactive alerts before storage capacity is reached

PX-Enterprise will be available in late July, 2016. Portworx will conduct demonstrations of PX-Enterprise at DockerCon 2016, (booth S36) in Seattle, June 19-21, 2016.

Portworx offers the industry–s first storage solution purpose-built for containers. Portworx container-defined storage spins up quickly and scales elastically based on application requirements — enabling organizations to manage their applications at container speed, in seconds, not days; slash storage and virtual machine costs by 70 percent; and get enterprise-class storage features for their containers.
