TokBox Adds Archiving for OpenTok Video Platform; Unveils Monetization Model

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwire) — 09/09/11 — TokBox, the company behind the OpenTok Video Platform, today, allowing anyone to record and replay face-to-face interaction on any website.

OpenTok-s API and plug-n-play apps are used to embed video-based communications into any website or service. The new archiving service opens a new frontier in user-generated content, enabling the capture and on-demand playback of any face-to-face conversation. The archiving service is available to developers via the OpenTok API, or to any casual user via the TokBooth plug-n-play app which can be added to any website in seconds.

Archiving is the first fee-based service from TokBox, with packages for streaming and storage ranging from $30 to $2,000 a month, although no charges will be incurred during the beta period. The core OpenTok API and apps will remain free.

Ian Small, TokBox CEO, commented, “People-s desire for self-expression has powered the growth of the web as we know it today. OpenTok now allows websites to take the most common form of human expression — face-to-face communication — and instantly turn it into on-demand content that can be leveraged forever. This new frontier of user-generated content captures peoples- personality, passion, and point of view so that websites can continue to drive engagement and time on-site.”

Fifteen organizations have already successfully trialed the archiving services, including Causes.com which uses archiving to create -wishes- to support fundraising appeals, and Goodreads, the largest online reading community in the world.

Chris Chan, VP of Product at Causes.com, commented, “We-ve found that sharing a personal connection to one-s cause is critical for successful fundraising. Video seems like the best way to help people tell a good story, but until now there hasn-t been a widget that makes recording just work. Tokbox fixes that.”

Kyusik Chung, VP of Business Development at Goodreads, added, “OpenTok helps Goodreads bring authors and readers literally face-to-face from across the world. With the new archiving service, we have been able to capture some fascinating interviews and put them on our site for people who missed the live event to watch any time.”

OpenTok by TokBox is the leading global interactive video platform, facilitating the addition of face-to-face experiences into any web property. Offering scalable, customizable solutions for enterprises, entrepreneurs and developers through an open and flexible API as well as simple plug-n-play apps, anyone with a web presence can harness the power of real-time communications to drive user engagement within their site or service. Based in San Francisco, CA, TokBox is privately held, with venture backing from Sequoia Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, DAG Ventures, and Youniversity Ventures.
