Racing and Wagering Western Australia Increases Application Performance and Operation Efficiency With Cisco Intelligent Network Modernisation

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — (Marketwire) — 10/31/11 — (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced that (RWWA) has implemented (Cisco UCS) along with a core and distributed Cisco intelligent network as integral components of a complete information technology (IT) infrastructure modernisation. RWWA is responsible for ensuring the integrity and long term viability of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing in Western Australia. RWWA is also responsible for wagering and sports betting where it trades as The TAB in 322 locations and 58 race tracks state-wide.

The IT rigours that RWWA must meet are on par with that of a stock exchange due to online, real-time transactions that occur by the second. This is coupled with the need to access information and complete transactions with high security and reliability from an increasingly mobile customer base. The Cisco core and distributed network plays an important role in enabling RWWA to deal effectively with the consistently high-volume of requests generated, for example, by major events such as Melbourne Cup when RWWA handles around AUD$27 million worth of transactions. Building on this, Cisco UCS has been employed at RWWA to be the backbone of its brand new interactive TV and mobile application betting systems.

Glen Fee, CIO of RWWA, commented, “RWWA has focused on providing new customer wagering experiences; good examples include interactive pay-TV and mobile applications to cater to the on-the-go user. These innovative systems require the highest level of security and availability and the Cisco Unified Computing System provides us with the capability to meet this business and marketplace demand.”

With a vision to secure the sustainable future of thoroughbred racing, RWWA invested in building an intelligent network that will continue to provide the flexibility and scalability required to meet the ongoing changes in customer demand and the commercial challenges in an increasingly competitive environment.

RWWA-s legacy system had 65 management points across the network, after consolidating and virtualising its data centre on the Cisco UCS this has been reduced to six which is expected to significantly reduce power consumption and greatly simplify management of RWWA-s applications.

The enterprise grade IP network connects all RWWA-s people, information, and devices with high security, mitigating risk by protecting its most valuable assets. The robust and reliable network maintains business continuity and productivity by providing RWWA with high uptime and availability.

As the number of mobile devices used by RWWA and their customers significantly increases and overtakes the last available IPv4 addresses, RWWA-s IPv6-ready Cisco intelligent network will help avoid lost customers and reduced global reach, instead, offering an infrastructure that is scalable and designed to facilitate future technology roll-outs.

“In a world where customers are demanding real-time information access and richer user interactions, many businesses around the world are choosing the Cisco Unified Computing System in the data centre to help ensure these needs are met. The Cisco Unified Computing System provides RWWA with the flexibility to introduce new applications and services cost effectively and the business agility to respond quickly to market demands, all critical factors in sustaining a competitive edge today,” said Dylan Morison, Data Centre Portfolio Manager for Cisco Australia and New Zealand.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) was established on August 1, 2003. RWWA-s charter under the Racing and Wagering Western Australia Act 2003 is to foster development, promote the welfare and ensure the integrity of metropolitan and country thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing in the interests of the long-term viability of the racing industry in Western Australia (WA). RWWA has responsibility for the off-course wagering functions trading as the TAB.
