(TSX VENTURE: UBN) is pleased to announce that it has commenced its service capability upgrade by purchasing new core electronic network infrastructure equipment. The equipment is an award winning carrier Ethernet aggregation platform and Optical Wave Division Multiplexer (WDM) manufactured by MRV Communications. The new equipment will dramatically increase the capability of Urban-s fibre optic network allowing it to expand capacity without laying more fibre. MRV is a leading global provider of optical communications solutions to telecommunications service providers, enterprises, utilities and municipalities.
WDM combines a number of signals onto a single optical fibre by using different wavelengths or colours of laser light, and multiplies the capacity of an individual fibre strand, thereby enhancing the value of each fibre. The aggregation switch seamlessly integrates signals from different transmission protocols which expands Urban-s target market without additional cost.
The new equipment, together with compatible building aggregation and edge devices from MRV, will give Urban the ability to provide data transfer and Internet service offerings at speeds up to 10 Gbps immediately, and up to 100 Gbps in 2012. This gives Urban the ability to meet the needs of a wide range of customers with high reliability, enhanced quality and security and the ability to compete effectively with any other service provider.
The company is presently in the process of testing and configuring the new equipment which will be fully installed with initial customer service delivery anticipated before year end.
