Cavium-s OCTEON(R) II Wins The Linley Group “Best Embedded Processor” Award

SAN JOSE, CA — (Marketwire) — 01/23/12 — Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, and the digital home, today announced that Cavium-s 32-core was selected as the winner of The Linley Group-s “Best Embedded Processor” Analysts- Choice Award.

The Linley Group First Annual Analysts Choice Awards recognizes the top processor products of 2011 in several major categories including embedded, mobile, PC, server, design IP, and related technology. To choose each winner, The Linley Group-s team of technology analysts focused on merits of the leading products that began shipping (or, in the case of IP, released to RTL) between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

“With multiple viable suppliers creating innovative new designs, we had no shortage of candidates in the high-speed embedded category, but Cavium-s OCTEON II CN6880 (see MPR 5/31/10), -Cavium Pushes OCTEON to 32 CPUs,- gets the nod as Best Embedded Processor of 2011,” said Joseph Byrne, senior analyst at The Linley Group. “Anchoring the high end of the OCTEON line, the CN6880 integrates 32 CPU cores, a high-performance cross-bar, four 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and more offload engines than competing processors. These engines accelerate the processing of regular expressions, compression, RAID6, encryption, and TCP functions. Aiming to deliver the most bang for the buck, the OCTEON II CPU uses an in-order, two-way superscalar design; with nine pipeline stages, it clocks at up to 1.5GHz. The chip entered production in 4Q11.”

“Our analysts are deeply familiar with processor products and technology, having conducted extensive research in order to deliver the firm-s popular publications and reports,” said Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst at The Linley Group. “We chose the winners on the basis of their performance, power, features and cost as appropriate for their target applications.”

“We-re very pleased and honored to receive this prestigious -Best Embedded Processor- award from The Linley Group. This reflects on Cavium-s OCTEON II market-leading, best-in-class integration and the tremendous success we-re having in the marketplace,” said YJ Kim, General Manager, Infrastructure Processor Group, Cavium. “OCTEON II CN68XX provides the highest application performance today of any communications processor and is in full manufacturing ramp across all ranges of embedded applications.”

The Linley Group has initiated the awards program to honor excellence in processor design and innovation, and recognize the processor products it believes will have the greatest impact on next-generation system design.
