CenterBeam Secures Patent for Solution That Enables Enterprises to “Bring Your Own Security” to the Cloud

SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwire) — 02/16/12 — CenterBeam, Inc., a pioneer in delivering hosted IT services, today announced that it has been awarded a patent for its innovations in single-sign-on (SSO) and identity management (IM) for users of cloud services. This technology has served as the foundation of CenterBeam-s ground-breaking hosted services and has been leveraged by clients for more than a decade. With CenterBeam-s innovations, clients can “bring your own security” (BYOS) to the cloud in order to experience enterprise-class hosted services that are comparable in functionality to many on-premise solutions available in the market today.

“As organizations of all sizes become attracted to the rapidly expanding population of cloud-based applications, having effective SSO and IM capabilities are critical,” said Jeffrey M. Kaplan, managing director of THINKstrategies, Inc. and the founder of the Cloud Computing Showplace. “CenterBeam-s patented technology will enable more organizations to leverage SSO/IM capabilities and best practices that have been proven by some of the most security-conscious companies in the world.”

CenterBeam-s patented innovation focuses on separating access rights from security, which enables enterprises to BYOS to the cloud. This process eliminates the need for enterprises to rely on Active Directory® Federation Services (ADFS) infrastructure for basic SSO functionality and, at the same time, gives enterprises greater control over their security policies and services in the cloud. The solution enables the cloud provider to authenticate all of its hosted services with real SSO to the customer-s Active Directory without the need for ADFS. The customer, then, is able to control its own user accounts and policies, such as password strength, number of retries and unique passwords. This combination of features enables CenterBeam to deliver solid security posture that is in line with exacting standards, such as SAS-70/SSAE-16 Type II and SOC2, which are common in the industry today.

“Many enterprises have implemented rigorous security policies to protect their IT resources from being compromised. When they move their infrastructure and applications to the cloud, they-re often forced to lower their security standards to leverage consumer-class cloud services or they must create their own SSO using a third-party tools that are complex and come at a high cost,” said Shahin Pirooz, CenterBeam-s CTO. “CenterBeam developed its patented approach at the company-s inception, long before anyone realized the power of the cloud and what the crucial requirements necessary to support enterprises moving to the cloud.”

“This patent confirms the unique and privileged position that CenterBeam holds with respect to security management in the cloud, and represents an important asset for our company,” said Keith Roberts, CenterBeam-s general counsel. “We will diligently investigate and aggressively pursue any firms that attempt to violate our intellectual property rights.”

CenterBeam created the world-s first multi-tenant hosted exchange solution in conjunction with Microsoft more than a decade ago. Since then, CenterBeam has focused on providing mid-sized businesses with enterprise-class IT management, services and support. CenterBeam differentiates itself through its broad service portfolio, providing a cohesive IT solution no matter where a customer-s infrastructure resides — on premise or in the cloud.
