SwiftKey Wins Most Innovative Mobile App at Global Mobile Awards 2012

BARCELONA, SPAIN — (Marketwire) — 02/28/12 — British start-up SwiftKey was today awarded the coveted Most Innovative App at the mobile industry-s Oscars, the Global Mobile Awards 2012. The award was given to the language technology experts after a remarkable year that has seen their Android app SwiftKey X, which showcases the company-s natural language engine, reach the number one spot in Android-s global paid apps chart. The award-s jury of industry experts praised the company-s ingenious technology and acknowledged the potential for its broad application.

The Global Mobile Award, presented at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, validates the vision of SwiftKey-s two founders, who saw the potential for applying breakthroughs in natural language processing to the industry-wide challenge of accurately typing on modern devices.

SwiftKey X became the most downloaded Android app in the world last year after being selected by Google as one of the few applications to celebrate its 10 billionth app download

SwiftKey X has now been downloaded over five million times, saving 40 billion keystrokes — the equivalent to roughly half a millennium spent typing

SwiftKey SDK launched at MWC 2012, making it simple for OEMs and enterprises to quickly integrate SwiftKey-s powerful language technology into their own devices

“Winning such an award, especially one decided by a panel of experts and industry veterans, is a huge honor,” said Jonathan Reynolds, SwiftKey CEO, after collecting the award with CTO Dr. Ben Medlock. “The mobile industry is currently going through an immensely exciting period, and to be picked out as the most innovative from a field of such amazing companies is a massive complement. We are very excited about the potential for our technology to be applied in all areas of the consumer electronics industry.”

The awards judges praised the talent and success of the SwiftKey team: “Clever technology — a much needed innovation that will make typing on smartphones and tablets so much easier.”

Thirty-one awards were given away in total at the ceremony, which sought to reward the world-s best mobile companies. The event also saw the Samsung Galaxy S II win Best Smartphone, Apple-s iPad II awarded Best Mobile Tablet and Google Maps win Best Consumer Mobile Service. A full list of winners can be found at .

SwiftKey has also been chosen as one of three companies shortlisted for Best Start-up Business in the Guardian Awards for Digital Innovation this month, placing the team up against financial records service Duedil and property website Zoopla.

SwiftKey X makes typing much easier on Android smartphones, replacing the touchscreen keyboard with one powered by smarter natural language technology. The app, which launched in beta in July 2010, understands how words work together to give much more accurate corrections and predictions than other keyboards. It also powerfully learns over time to make typing easier and even more accurate, and users can personalize it using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, SMS or their blog posts.

To date SwiftKey has received more than five million downloads, saving users 40 billion keystrokes: equivalent to about half a millennium spent typing.

TouchType Ltd, the company behind SwiftKey, was founded by Cambridge University graduates Jon Reynolds, CEO and Dr. Ben Medlock, CTO in August 2008. With a growing team of over 30 people, the company is based in Southwark, London, UK.
