Vello Systems Launches in UK, Delivering Network Virtualization to Britain

MENLO PARK, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/15/12 — Vello Systems is establishing a UK division to provide Vello-s innovative networking systems to the UK market. Vello-s launch in the UK marks the first arrival of a startup focused on software-defined networking systems in the UK. Software-defined networking is set to be the most important innovation in networking in 25 years, holding out the promise of replacing today-s complex networking architecture with a simpler, more flexible networking environment that will enable networks to scale in keeping with the massive growth in data affecting enterprises and network operators worldwide.

Vello is a leader in the move to software-defined networks (SDN), a new approach to building large-capacity networks aimed at addressing the problems of the current networking paradigm. Today-s networks, based on the IP router as the key element of networking intelligence, involve a multilayered network architecture where every change to the network involves extensive reconfiguration and “rediscovery” of the network. These processes, often involving manual intervention, take up time and resources and have made the network too slow and cumbersome to keep up with rapid changes, particularly those required by server and storage virtualization, two trends that are increasingly dominant within data centers.

SDN replaces this network architecture with an entirely new architecture in which the differences between routers and other devices are blurred by making all networking switches software-programmable. A new networking protocol known as OpenFlow enables communications between networking devices and a powerful SDN network controller. SDN will enable the “virtualization” of networks, providing for pooled resources, user-level customization and rapid modification of network resources, just as server virtualisation enables those features for servers.

SDN is supported by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), an industry group including many of the world-s largest data center operators. Founded in 2011, the ONF includes such big-data leaders as Google, Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, and Yahoo. The ONF is co-host of Britain-s first-ever conference focusing on SDN, Cloud-Net, which began Monday March 12th in London.

“Vello is aggressively advocating SDN because we see it as the only way that today-s networks can scale to accommodate the deluge of data we see coming from consumer Internet use, enterprises who are increasingly mining data to manage their businesses better, and service providers who are building businesses by handling data for those other two sets of users,” commented Karl May, CEO, Vello Systems.

“Large network operators, including many in the UK, are enthusiastic about the capabilities of the SDN features in our products because they are often struggling to expand their networks, deal with growing traffic, growing regulatory requirements, and growing opportunities in the market, while still keep their networks agile and scalable. Traditional networking models work well for many parts of the public Internet, but they cannot meet the needs of many enterprise networks or cloud networks,” he continued.

Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, Vello has a strong following among enterprises and service providers in the US for its networking systems, which provide intelligent, high-capacity connectivity between data centers and other facilities today. The company, founded in 2009, has grown quickly due to the ultra-low-latency features of its core product, the CX family, enabling companies to execute transactions at the speeds the IT innovators demand, be they financial traders or enterprises moving large volumes of data between sites. Vello has over 1,000 systems deployed worldwide. Vello-s UK operation is led by Amir Khan, who has previously held senior sales roles at companies including Cisco and Juniper Networks. Establishing itself in the UK is an important strategic move for Vello as it targets further expansion over the next 12 months in Europe and Asia.

Vello, a member of the ONF, was a sponsor of Cloud-Net. On Tuesday, Vello CEO Karl May gave a talk at the conference entitled Leveraging Software-Defined Networking to Customize and Simplify Advanced Offerings for Service Providers.
