HEINEKEN Supply Chain Selects Active Power to Protect Critical Operations

AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwire) — 03/19/12 — Clean, continuous power is essential for highly automated operations as even the slightest power disturbance, known as a micro-outage, can result in production downtime and substantial economic loss. This is particularly true in remote areas where utility power is unreliable.

In addition, these environments can be harsh and not ideal for conventional critical backup power systems that require conditioned space for operation.

To protect its sensitive operations from inconsistent grid power, HEINEKEN Supply Chain selected Active Power-s highly reliable and rugged UPS (uninterruptible power supply) technology to directly address its ongoing power infrastructure challenges.

Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW) will deploy its CleanSource 750 kVA UPS system at the Dutch brewing company-s facility in the city of Saint-Denis on the French island of Reunion. The system will ship in late March 2012 and be deployed in the second quarter of 2012. Netherlands based Piet Brouwer Elektro is serving as the electrical contractor on the project.

With CleanSource UPS, the brewery is able to deploy a highly reliable and resilient critical backup power system right on its production floor without the need for cooling equipment. A traditional UPS system would have required additional design and build costs to house the batteries in conditioned space which was not an option for the customer. From an economic standpoint, operating costs are lower and more predictable compared to a conventional system due to CleanSource UPS- minimal maintenance requirements.

“When we approach applications like HEINEKEN, we evaluate design requirements from a holistic perspective to better understand what the customer is trying to achieve not only in terms of availability, but also in terms of energy and space efficiencies,” said Martin Olsen, vice president and general manager at Active Power. “For this project, our system-s inherent reliability; rugged, electromechanical design; and low operating costs enabled the customer to meet its specific power design criteria initially set forth.”

Founded in 1992, Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW) designs and manufactures continuous power solutions and critical backup power systems that enable datacenters and other mission critical operations to remain -on- 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Active Power solutions are intelligently efficient, inherently reliable and economically green, providing environmental benefits and energy and space efficiencies to customers- financial benefit. The company-s products and solutions are built with pride in Austin, Texas, at a state-of-the-art, ISO 9001:2008 registered manufacturing and test facility. Global customers are served via Austin and three regional operations centers located in the United Kingdom, Germany, and China, supporting the deployment of systems in more than 40 countries.
