RGB Networks- Just-in-Time-Packaging Streamlines Delivery of VOD, NDVR and TV Everywhere Services and Reduces Expensive Storage and Bandwidth Costs

SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwire) — 04/03/12 — RGB Networks, the leading provider of scalable multiscreen IP video delivery solutions, has added new “just-in-time” packaging (JITP) capabilities to its award-winning . This new technology enables video service providers (VSPs) to deliver adaptive bitrate video-on-demand (VOD), network digital video recorder (NDVR) and TV Everywhere services without pre-packaging all their video assets in each of the adaptive streaming protocols, thus reducing the need for costly storage and network bandwidth, and allowing VSPs to more quickly and cost-effectively expand their TV Everywhere libraries.

Consumer demand for watching programming anywhere, anytime, on any device and over any network is growing rapidly and cable television operators and other VSPs are racing to provide comprehensive multiscreen TV Everywhere services to satisfy their subscribers. One of the keys to delivering TV Everywhere is the “packaging” of each program into Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS), and the newly-ratified MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG DASH) — the four major adaptive streaming protocols necessary to support the exploding number of tablets, such as the iPad, smartphones, PCs and other mobile devices, as well as set-top boxes.

However, before packaging, VSPs must first create a number of “profiles” of each program, based on the devices to which they-re delivering. Each profile is optimized for viewing on a particular type of device (e.g. smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC, etc.) and for a given bitrate. This is to ensure the best possible picture quality on all viewing devices and to accommodate fluctuations in available bandwidth. This requirement for multiple profiles of each program, combined with the need to save copies of every profile in various streaming protocols, requires a substantial amount of storage and forces VSPs to dramatically increase their storage capacity as they add new programs to their TV Everywhere libraries.

The TransAct Packager-s new JITP capabilities specifically address this issue. Rather than having to pre-package all the profiles of every one of their programs in all adaptive streaming protocols, VSP-s simply package programs in real time into the appropriate protocol only when that content is requested by viewers on a specific device. This JITP substantially reduces the need to add additional storage and enables VSPs to manage their storage and bandwidth costs as their libraries of content available for multiscreen distribution grow.

“We-ve worked closely with several large service providers over the last year to help expand their TV Everywhere trials and deployments and our new just-in-time packaging technology was specifically developed to help accelerate their rollout of place- and time-shifted services,” said Andy Salo, Director, Product Marketing for RGB Networks. “Leveraging what was already a unique packager product, the addition of on-the-fly packaging to our TransAct Packager opens up new opportunities for video service providers to deploy large-scale VOD and NDVR applications across multiple devices, providing them with yet another compelling service to ensure subscriber retention.”

With a simple licensing structure, JITP capabilities can be added to the TransAct Packager at any time without an expensive or labor-intensive hardware upgrade or replacement. In addition, the TransAct Packager with JITP capabilities can encrypt content with industry standard AES-128 and can be integrated with leading key management server (KMS) vendors, enabling viewing by only authorized client players across the HLS, SS and HDS adaptive streaming formats. It also supports closed captioning (608/708) for HLS, SS and Adobe HDS.

A demonstration of RGB-s new just-in-time packaging technology can be seen at NAB, April 16-19, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The RGB team will be available at booth #SU10412 throughout the show to provide a hands-on demo and more details about this first-of-its-kind capability.

RGB-s unique TransAct Packager is a key component of the company-s Enhanced Video Intelligence Architecture (eVIA) — a comprehensive TV Everywhere solution. It performs the critical packaging step in which H.264 video streams are “packaged” in all four of the major adaptive streaming protocols — Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe HDS and MPEG DASH — for both live and on-demand delivery of premium content. This flexible hardware- or software-based solution packages video for delivery to content delivery networks (CDN), origin servers, and end-user devices, and is ideally suited for large-scale centralized or decentralized deployments. Additionally, the TransAct Packager encrypts content by integrating key exchanges with leading digital rights management (DRM) servers, works seamlessly with firewalls, and effectively manages and compensates for packet drops and temporary bandwidth changes. The TransAct Packager works closely with RGB-s Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG), offering an integrated transcoding/packaging solution.

RGB Networks enables video service providers to migrate to a environment for the delivery of linear and on-demand video over managed and unmanaged IP networks. Wide adoption of the company-s IP video solutions is based on core strengths in transcoding, advertising and overlay insertion, and statistical multiplexing. RGB-s solutions for video delivery to TVs, desktop and mobile devices are built to deliver the highest video quality at the best price-performance on the market — they uniquely offer the density and scalability required to support the growing demands of consumers with integrated functionality that simplifies operators- network architectures and minimizes operational costs. RGB-s products are deployed by over 200 cable, telco, satellite, OTT and mobile operators in 30+ countries. Venture capital investment firms include Accel Partners, Comcast Interactive, Focus Ventures, Granite Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and Mitsui & Co. Venture Partners. RGB is a private, profitable company based in Sunnyvale, California with offices around the world.
