Electronic waste (e-waste) is on the rise in Canada at a startling rate. In fact, it is estimated that sixteen per-cent (16%) of Canadian households throw their e-waste in the garbage. is collaborating with (GHGT) to host three days of free e-waste collection on Saturday, April 21, 2012, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, April 22, 2012 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The community is invited to drop off unwanted computers, TV-s, telephones, DVD players, PDA-s, MP3 players, and other electronics, for recycling at Dixie Outlet Mall, 1250 South Service Road, Mississauga, ON., North-East parking lot. In support of the Hamilton Youth Tech Education program, GHGT will salvage the unwanted computers and use them for educational purposes. At-risk youths and young adults will learn, alongside qualified staff, how to build and repair computer systems and set up small networks. Program participants get to keep, and utilize, the refurbished computers for educational, e learning, and homework activities. In 2011, GHGT collected an estimated 146 tonnes of unwanted electronic equipment and has refurbished/reused hundreds of computers and other electronic devices.
“Our purpose is to create alternative youth education opportunities by developing innovative practices, such as, collecting community e-waste to fund and produce materials required for learning. We invite the community to help us dispose of obsolete electronics and divert this potentially toxic waste from local landfill sites,” said Ali Shahidi, President, Golden Horseshoe Green Tech.
