Survey of Healthcare Organizations Finds That 1 in 4 Have No Real Driver for Their Mobile Health Initiative

CAMBRIDGE, MA — (Marketwire) — 09/19/12 — Medullan, Inc. (), the brains behind , announced today the results of a survey it conducted of healthcare organizations on their mHealth strategies and drivers. 106 healthcare providers, insurers and other healthcare-related organizations answered the survey between April and July, 2012. Among the findings:

“No driver” was the top choice across all respondents to the question, “What is the top driver for your organization-s mHealth initiative?” In fact, nearly one in four organizations are pursuing an mHealth initiative without a specific driver.

Among the 76 percent of respondents whose companies do have a driver, the top choices were “Increased member/customer/patient engagement” followed by “Pressure to compete with other organizations.”

Respondents report that the number one barrier to achieving their mHealth objectives is, “No clear strategy or objective,” followed closely by, “Lack of leadership for the initiative.”

Results did differ by organization type and size, however. For instance, no health care plans selected “No driver” — instead, the top driver in that sector was “Cost savings.” The picture also changed when viewed through the lens of company size: For companies with fewer than 1000 employees, for instance, the top drivers were “Cost savings” and “Improved health outcomes.”

Mobile Health (mHealth) initiatives, once viewed as experiments or luxuries, are now considered essential. According to research by Morgan Stanley, mobile internet use will overtake fixed internet use by 2014(1). Medullan-s survey demonstrated that not enough firms are maximizing their chances for mHealth success.

“We were surprised that so many organizations would undertake mHealth initiatives without a clear driver,” said Ahmed Albaiti, CEO of Medullan. “While we believe strongly in the value of mHealth initiatives, no driver and no objectives is a recipe for disaster. The overall impression we got from the survey results is that there is a lot of activity around mHealth but many companies are spinning their wheels, and need some focus.”
