Barnstable County, Cape Cod Towns, and Nantucket Tap Accela Cloud for Digital Regionalization Project

SAN RAMON, CA — (Marketwire) — 09/19/12 — Multiple counties and towns on Cape Cod have selected Accela Automation and will deploy the solution in the Accela Cloud for more efficient permitting, licensing, and inspections. The product will provide participating communities with the ability to manage permits and licenses, engage customers online, and arm government workers with mobile apps that improve productivity. The initiative, called “The Barnstable and Nantucket Counties- Regional Permitting, Licensing, and Inspection Project,” is a component of a Digital Regionalization effort that aims to advance economic development, government efficiency, and transparency though technological innovation.

As part of the larger “SmarterCape Initiative,” the digital regionalization project is establishing an automated system to issue municipal permits, licenses, and inspection services on Cape Cod and Nantucket to reduce costs and improve customer service. An automated system coordinated regionally will be more advanced and integrated than could be afforded by individual towns. The system will also eliminate redundant purchases of computer hardware.

Accela Automation will be piloted first in the Cape Cod and Island towns of Chatham, Nantucket, and Yarmouth in Spring 2013. Following the conclusion of the first-stage pilot, the initiative will expand to include other towns. Part of the project is being funded by a State of Massachusetts Community Innovation Challenge Grant, which aims to increase local cooperation and make government at all levels more efficient and effective in the delivery of municipal services for residents. The CIC Grant also promotes projects that have the potential to expand to other municipalities in the state.

Paul Niedzwiecki, Executive Director of the Cape Cod Commission, commented, “The 15 towns are taking a major step toward providing higher value services to citizens with easier access at a lower cost. This effort establishes Cape Cod as a leader in Smarter Government.”

Accela President and CEO Maury Blackman commented on the selection, “We-re delighted to be part of the SmarterCape Initiative. The Cape Cod Commission and its surrounding governments are showing they understand regulations and citizen services should be approached regionally rather than individually when appropriate. The result will be multi-fold: better customer service, improved regional services, and reduced costs.”
