Jerry & Maggie: This Is Not Photography

CARPINTERIA, CA — (Marketwire) — 10/19/12 — Online learning company has published a feature-length documentary on the contrasting creative processes of controversial artists Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor. The newest in a series of lynda.com films intended to inspire creativity, ventures inside the couple-s quiet Florida compound to see how — and why — they create their haunting, layered dreamscapes.

The husband-and-wife artists represent both ends of the analog-to-digital spectrum: Jerry experiments with negatives in an old-school darkroom while Maggie composes on the computer screen using found objects. Together, they push the boundaries of photography-s possibilities.

“They-re the most amazing, modern-day, surreal storytellers that I know,” says Adobe Systems senior creative director Russell Brown, who points to Jerry-s images as having influenced the creation of Photoshop. In Jerry & Maggie, Brown joins other preeminent voices in photography to lend insight to the artists- work, from the composition to the criticism.

“I love the fact that Jerry-s work mixes humor with the spiritual, reflective, and contemplative,” says Bruce Heavin, cofounder of lynda.com with Lynda Weinman, and an executive producer of the film. “He pushes your imagination to think a little further.”

Directed by Scott Erickson and produced by David Niles White, Jerry & Maggie is the latest in the lynda.com Creative Inspirations series. Intended to inspire viewers to pursue their passions, these films offer a rare insider-s view into the creative process of noteworthy artists in the fields of photography, design, music, illustration, animation, and more.

The documentary premieres at 5 p.m. Friday, October 26, 2012, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City as part of the 2012 PDN PhotoPlus International Conference + Expo. Uelsmann and Taylor, along with film-s director and producer, will attend the event and take part in a Q&A session following the screening.
