New Simba Report Examines K-12 Textbook Adoption Market

STAMFORD, CT — (Marketwire) — 01/14/13 — The implementation of Common Core State Standards in school districts and the looming new assessments associated with the standards and the obsolescence of many of the textbooks currently used in classrooms are combining to fuel demand for new curriculum materials in 2013, according to the “2012 National Textbook Adoption Scorecard and 2013 Outlook,” the new strategic education market report from Simba Information.

Schools in seven states will be evaluating and purchasing materials in reading and English language arts and nine states will offer opportunities in mathematics, as states juggled adoption calendars to push reading and math to the forefront in the next two years.

“While demand is high, states and schools are still working with cuts in spending in both state and local budgets that remain very tight,” said Kathy Mickey, senior analyst and managing editor of the Education Group at Simba Information. “There will be some tough decisions made this spring.”

Heightening demand for new materials is the escalating interest in schools for technology — the uptake in the use of mobile devices and the clamor for materials to make the best use of the devices for learning.

“The demand for digital materials is opening up the adoption process itself and attracting a broader array of content providers,” Mickey said. “Schools continue to see value in print textbooks, but the new digital programs and tools are taking hold.”

The new Simba report details the adoption opportunities coming up in 2013, outlines opportunities through 2016 and consolidates results of specific state adoptions in 2012.
