Acacia Communications Gains Significant Momentum in the 100G Coherent Market

MAYNARD, MA — (Marketwire) — 03/14/13 — , the leader in delivering intelligent subsystems for ultra-high speed fiber optic transmission, today announced that 1,000 units of its commercial AC100 coherent OIF-compliant modules are in use globally, doubling the deployment in less than five months.

Addressing rapidly increasing market demand for multi-source agreement (MSA) modules, Acacia Communications- solutions are deployed by data center operators, carriers, cable operators and service providers to meet ever-expanding requirements for capacity.

Concurrently, Acacia additionally announced that the company has significantly expanded its worldwide headquarters in Maynard, MA, tripling its lab facilities along with more office space to accommodate robust growth in customers and employees.

At next week-s OFC/NFOEC event, several Acacia executives will be presenting:

Co-founder Christian Rasmussen will be presenting his paper on “Real-time DSP for 100+Gbps Systems” on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in Ballroom A at 8:00 a.m.;

CTO and Co-Founder Benny Mikkelsen, will be giving a short course on “100 Gb/s and Beyond Transmission Systems, Design and Design Trade-offs” on Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m.

Director of Photonic Integration Chris Doerr, who also heads the OFC Optical Devices for Switching, Filtering and Interconnects Subcommittee, will be holding a Short Course on March 17 at 9 a.m. entitled “Highly Integrated Monolithic Photonic Integrated Circuits.”

According to analyst firm Dell-Oro Group, the Wavelength Division Multiplexer (WDM) marketplace is expected to reach $13 billion in 2017, fueled by 100G shipments — growing at 75 percent CAGR over the next 5 years. Additionally, Infonetics Research-s recent survey of global network operators highlighted that 100G will take over most core networks by 2015.

“In the past 12 months there has been strong growth in the 100G coherent MSA module supplier market share of 100G port shipments, fueled by wider acceptance of MSA as well as pluggable 100G coherent modules by top tier Network Equipment Manufacturers,” said Raj Shanmugaraj, Acacia-s president and CEO. “The demand for capacity and the growth of video and IP traffic is driving rapid deployment of 100G. Our AC100 100G coherent module improves transmission performance for long-haul and regional applications by leveraging powerful digital signal processing techniques and optimized high-speed optical design. Standards-compliant modules offer the benefits of best-in-class performance, powered by rapid development cycles, at lower costs, enabled by a competitive supply chain thereby minimizing the high costs of developing coherent technology.”

“Content and service providers are rapidly leveraging optical technologies in their regional, metro networks and data centers, for faster interconnects to support increasing bandwidth needs,” said Eve Griliches, vice president of optical networking, ACG Research. “Workload mobility, virtualization and cloud computing have all changed the data center. Faster transmission rates, smaller form factors and next-generation 100G coherent transceivers are vital for addressing these requirements. Acacia-s widespread deployment affirms their technology is enabling the flexibility, scale and performance at a low cost per bit.”

The AC100 provides unmatched optical performance including Soft-Decision Forward Error Correction and sophisticated digital signal processing capabilities. The solution avoids the necessity of multiple regeneration sites across the network, reducing total network costs and complexity. Fully tested and qualified, the AC100 is the first 100G coherent module to be OIF compliant. Key features and benefits include:

Lowest power consumption in the industry, well below OIF recommendations

Fully Telcordia qualified

OIF MSA-compliant form factor

Fast and extensive Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation range, enabling transport of 100G over fiber links that cannot even support 10G today

Comprehensive performance monitoring providing instant system and link information

Acacia was founded in 2009 by a group of seasoned entrepreneurs with a unique combination of optical, electrical, communication, ASIC, DSP, manufacturing and business skills. Acacia designs, develops, manufactures, and markets intelligent subsystems for ultra high speed fiber optic transmission for local, metro, long-haul, and ultra-long haul applications. Acacia-s products use cutting edge optical and electrical technology based upon sophisticated modulation and digital signal processing techniques to power high-speed transmission at 40 Gbps, 100Gbps and beyond.
