IEEE-ISTO Announces The Connected Lighting Alliance as Its Newest Member Program

PISCATAWAY, NJ — (Marketwired) — 04/02/13 — The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO), a federation of leading industry groups and consortia dedicated to the advancement of standardized technologies for the benefit of industry, today announces The Connected Lighting Alliance as its newest member program.

The Connected Lighting Alliance aims to promote the global adoption and growth of interoperable wireless lighting solutions. As the lighting industry shifts towards wireless connectivity, a unified approach on the type of connectivity implementations is needed.

The Connected Lighting Alliance and its members plan to draft requirements documents and to evaluate and support open standards on specific lighting interfaces to enhance market adoption rates and consumer satisfaction. These efforts are designed to boost consumer confidence as market adoption of wireless lighting products should enhance the user experience.

“We-ve seen an increase in the number of lighting groups forming recently,” said Marco W. Migliaro, president and CEO, IEEE-ISTO. “Having supported similar groups in the past, we are well positioned to support The Connected Lighting Alliance as their efforts to provide clarity in the thicket of wireless connectivity standards will benefit the lighting industry.”

The initial founding members of The Connected Lighting Alliance are GE Lighting, Lutron, Osram, Panasonic, Philips, and Toshiba with initial activities focusing on consumer lighting applications.

“Driven by market needs, consumer products in the lighting industry are shifting towards wireless connectivity,” said Simon den Uijl, secretary general, The Connected Lighting Alliance. “By joining the IEEE-ISTO federation and circumventing typical not-for-profit start-up headaches, our members will be able to quickly get to work on evaluating and supporting standardized solutions for the lighting industry.”
