Barclaycard-s April Fools- Day PayWag Concept Turns Man-s Best Friend Into Hands-free Wallet

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwired) — 04/02/13 — April Fools- Day is always a great opportunity for brands to highlight their imagination and sense of humour, and this year has been no exception. Fully embracing this creative challenge, Barclaycard took its innovative technology one step further by announcing a new product concept for dogs called Barclaycard PayWag.

On Monday, the fictitious device was introduced on the feed and the brand-s Facebook page as the world-s first contactless payment device created specifically for dogs. With convenience being at the heart of many Barclaycard innovations, this new invention was said to extend contactless purchasing abilities to a customer-s canine friend. According to an illustrative video set in a pet store, PayWag would work just like a regular card, so every transaction completed would appear on a customer-s statement just like normal purchases, helpfully marked with a paw print symbol. Employing the same near-field communication technology used by Barclaycard-s other contactless payment products, the PayWag could be attached discreetly, securely, and comfortably onto any regular dog collar. To complete transactions, cashiers would only need to place the contactless terminal close to the collar, just as they would with all other NFC payment products.

According to the page, the April Fools- Day product was inspired by the launch of Barclaycard PayTag last year; PayWag would extend the benefits of contactless payments to dogs and their owners. Dogs wearing PayWags would be able to handle transactions if their owners- hands were full or if they didn-t have their wallets with them. For example, if someone was out running with their dog and decided to stop to buy a bottle of water, the dog could pay for it. Additionally, when out shopping at the pet store, dogs with PayWags would be able to pay directly for any new toys they selected. At this time there are no plans to produce the PayWag, for now it is simply an entertaining concept designed to celebrate April Fools- Day whilst highlighting the convenience and potential of contactless technology.
